Stray Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I got this kit off ebay as kind of an impulse buy. Once it arrived I found the body had been warped from being crushed a little in the box. Either from the original purchase or from the owner having something else stacked on top of it for a long time. But either way the damage is repairable with a bit of hot water and patience. That being said, I am rather disappointed in the level of detail the kit has. I mean it is totally buildable, but some oversights and/or just plain simplicity in the tooling makes this, to me, a kit I would rather not build. It has a couple of redeeming features, but they are not enough to outweigh the areas it is lacking to me, so unless I had some kind of sentimental attachment to this particular year and make of car it just wouldn't get built. Just to list a couple things, here is the manifold for the triple two barrels. As you can see the end two carby mounts are crisp, but the middle one seems to have been molded as a melted blob! Now, here is the brake booster/master cylinder. Yes it looks okay from the top, it can be detailed up nicely. But it is only half! Take a look at the exhaust. Molded with the diff and rear suspension as a single piece. With massive blocks connecting it to the axle housings. And how about the molded in details in the engine bay... Is this the tallest battery ever used in any car in history or what??? The kit does have a second option of intake though, offering twin four barrel carbs with a nice sized stack for each. They forgot to include a manifold to go with them though. What was revell thinking? This one is going to go in the stash I guess, and it is 1/24 so I don't think I have much use for it maybe apart from the wheels. Maybe one day...
Fat Brian Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 This kit was originally a GTX and was released in the very early 80's, the GTX kit had a tunnel ram intake for the two four barrels. It shares very similar construction to Monograms 64 GTO, 70 Chevelle, 71 Road Runner, 71 Hemi 'Cuda, 70 GSX, 71 Challenger, and a few more I'm forgetting. They are a bit soft on detail and the "melting" batteries and such are definitely dated but these kits were a significant step forward for their time. With a little care you can turn it into a very nice model. Remove the tabs holding the exhaust to the axle, add a little ridge where the bottom of the battery should be to make it look like a battery tray, dig in the parts box for a better master cylinder. Or send it to my house, I'll take it.
Edsel-Dan Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 They Original version of this kit the GTX molded in Bright Lime Green was originally tooled in the 80's by Monogram NOT Revell So that is why it is 1/24, and detail is lacking. The Dual 4BBL setup was added to the GTX kit to make it a 2n1 about 1 year after first issued. this time in metallic Blue It has also been issued as a Superbird twice. Once in Straight Street stock format and then with Richard Petty Decals to make a Street COPY of his race car I have Both of those, the GTX & Road Runner versions Only the Lime Green GTX is Started
Mr mopar Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 My biggest complaint with all these Monogram 1/24 cars is the inner fenders are not even close to real mopar one's so I cut them out and make new one's ,other then that I like them .

Stray Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 See... the knowledge base here is amazing! And Brian, if you have a chassis/suspension, front bumper and tail light lenses for an 1/25 MPC '74 Cuda I would gladly trade this for them
Fat Brian Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 That's one kit I've never had, I've got a busted up body but that's about it.
Stray Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 Bummer. I have a perfect body! That is I have a perfect Cuda body. My body is about as far from perfect as it can get without being deemed NSFW.
Mr mopar Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 You can still get a replacement body from Revell, they still make that kit!
Stray Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 Just found the GTX you guys were talking about on ebay too http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-1991-Monogram-Plymouth-GTX-2-n-1-1-24-Model-Kit-/331540523628?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4d315aea6c

There were some huge intake options, lotsa wheel/tire/slick combinations, but no headers... .
Junkman Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 But either way the damage is repairable with a bit of [...] patience. What's that?
Nova-ss Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Monogram has alot of those kits with these problems.that I'm no worried about other then what hasbeen discussed..what are the inaccuracies of of this kit.I'm work on one now.body has been painted but nothing else.I'm not quite familiar with 1 to 1 70 RR's.I have already removed the exhaust from rearend and filling the top of rear axle.engine bay has alot to be desired. .but that is normal for Monogram.
johnbuzzed Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Chris, if you Google image 1970 Mopar B body engine or 1970 Road Runner engine, or anything similar (even '68 or '69 are very similar), you'll get a lot of info to add some missing details. I have about three of the kits mentioned above on my shelves and, once they're built up, you really don't see the problem with the open rear end or master cylinder. I built them way back ('84-'88) and if I built them again, I doubt I would correct that rear end problem- especially if it was just a shelf model.
fseva Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 More reasons to replace this Roarunner with a newly tooled 1:25!
Casey Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 What was revell thinking? "Let's update the is kit a little bit, provide a new version of the '70 Mopar B-body which no other company offers, and throw in a few parts which buyers can use on our other 1/24 Mopar musclecar kits." The interior was completely updated in this kit, and now includes a bench seat; ...a non-console platform-style "floor", a Pistol Grip floor shifter, separate door/quarter panels; ...Roadrunner grille, "police" wheels (though not correct for this particular car), as well as a very nice decal sheet, too. For kitbashing alone, it's worth the $15 or so.

gtx6970 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) . For kitbashing alone, it's worth the $15 or so. Short of picking one up at a swap meet where you have to practically give modern kits away ...where are you getting them for $15 ? ANY store near me kits are $20 and up. Edited May 1, 2015 by gtx6970

niteowl7710 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I bought mine for $12 at NNL East when it was freshly reissued in 2012.
Luc Janssens Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) More reasons to replace this Roarunner with a newly tooled 1:25! Round-2 holds the right cards for that one, but sadly they don't tool up new stuff as they cancelled the long rumored Dodge Demon kit. Oh well an original Jo-han can still be obtained for only an arm and a leg. Edited May 1, 2015 by Luc Janssens

Oh well an original Jo-han can still be obtained for only an arm and a leg. I dunno ... they might take a first-born child but I'm still kind of attached to mine (and he's almost 17 =8-O ).

Oh well an original Jo-han can still be obtained for only an arm and a leg. There are resin copies of the JO-Han 70 RR body that would work with the AMT 68 RR kit
Drake69 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 ..as they cancelled the long rumored Dodge Demon kit.... I am still furious over this....
