I have always been a fan of 60-70ties muscle carsarrow-10x10.png. Gassers are OK but were not my passion. That said, I recently I caught a show on cable called "Vegasarrow-10x10.png Rat Rods".

In features the builds of Steve Darnell and his crew at Welderup fabrication; their specialty is building custom "Rat Rods".

However, what caught my eye was one of the personally rides Darnell owns (among several Rat Rods) was a `55 Chevy Sedan150 Gasser called "WelderUp".

For those of you who love the 50-60ties era Gassers this one is truly a knod to that era. I love this one

because its authentic touches – like the quick-change rear end – hark back to days spent at the drag races when you might need to change ratiosarrow-10x10.png between runs. Steve Darnell and his team have been doing this long enough to know why it’s there rather than just bolting it on because they saw somebody else do it. The same goes for the pie crust slicks: low pressure for traction. You can imagine the white wall crinkling up as the wheel tries to rotate inside it; the Wieand-blown V8 throwing the power to the rear; the weight transfer making the skinny fronts giggle as they momentarily lift off the ground. But, this isnt a straight-up gasser tribite...its been tweaked up to 10+ on the dial and has hints of Hot Wheels about it.

I thought I would post a few pictures of it for you Gasser lovers out there...hopefully it can provides some great ideas for yourarrow-10x10.png next Gasser build.

I have move photos of WelderUp in my photobucket

Hope you enjoy.

The concept is cool. But the whole torn hood thing just cheapens it if you care what I think.

Looks like they ruined a solid 2dr sedan that could have been built in a more period style than "period".

Agree completely. What a tragic waste. Fortunately, it doesn't look like anything has been done that can't be undone.

I get what they are doing and it is different. Just not my style. I guess I am more of a traditonalist when it comes to cars.

I agree. I like when somebody does something out of the box. They built what they wanted. I know the guys in the shop are proud of it.

But, there are a few that they have built that I really like. The Cummins powered rat rod is out of control. Their wrecker is way cool. But this particular car, I'm not diggin it very much.

I'm betting it turned out about the way the owner wanted it ... that good with me.

The stance and whitewall slicks on mags were common on a few of those early Gassers. The hood, although nothing I would do, is clever.

For good or bad, I am predicting this is the next wave of vehicle trend... if we are not already there.

Just like in the 60s and early 70's, gassers were awesome, everyone wanted one.. they got crazier and crazier to the point they were so over the top they became the streetfreaks of the later 70's... Luckally this trend should be as short as before because the vehicles are so out there, not many people will take the leap. I just like to sit back and enjoy all the creativity. ;)

I've seen that car before--on an old Roth or Roach T-shirt!
