69NovaYenko Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) A number of you may remember Glasspack performance mufflers. They were the long straight pipe style mufflers developed in the late 60ties thru early 70ties. Celebrated for their straight through flow which seriously reducing back pressure and increasing power to street rods and muscle cars. And, lets not fail to mention that unmistakably unique, deep, throaty, rumble they gave off at idle and the thundering powerful balls-to-the-wall roar when you tromped on the throttle. There were several manufactures of these style of mufflers including Cherry Bomb, Thrush, Smithy, Maganaflow, Competition Muffler etc. I was wondering if anyone cast mufflers similar to these: or the glasspack header mufflers. GMCMAN52 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 not sure of any vendor, but by the looks of them it would be easy to make from a few different round stock and then paint to match which brand you need
espo Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 You might want to check the After Market Directory, or you could make your own with different diameters of Plastruct or use aluminum tubing.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 B.N.L Resin has them for $2.00 a pair plus shipping (Red Cherry Bomb style). I used to have some that were made out of aluminum, but I don't remember who they were made by. They were very nice though. You might watch Ebay for other options.
High octane Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Have you checked out the mufflers that come with the Revell '68 Hemi Dart kit, or wouldn't they work?
The70judgeman Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 (edited) The metal(aluminum) "Cherry Bombs" were made by Detail Master. They're what I used on my '72 Olds Cutlass. Edited December 6, 2015 by The70judgeman

In fact the entire exhaust system (headers headers and glasspack mufflers) for 426 version is awesome! Wish some one cast the entire exhaust setup from that kit so I could get several copies for other future projects. Edited December 6, 2015 by 69NovaYenko

MeatMan Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 VCG resins has both in aluminum at $6 - $7 a pair.
W-31 Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 The AMT 69 Hurst olds comes with them. Just a thought.
drodg Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I had no idea you could find these. I had a set on my 72 Demon. My dad was not happy with my decision. Thank you for the information1
69NovaYenko Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 The AMT 69 Hurst olds comes with them. Just a thought.I just peeked at my AMT `69 Olds 442 kit. I saw the Olds 455 forced cold air induction system (which is well executed IMHO) but not glasspack mufflers like the samples pictured above. However, the AMT kit has a nice pair of factory stock mufflers. Could you have been thinking of the Revell `72 Olds 442 kit that has the glasspacks.
69NovaYenko Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) Did followup on the B.N.L Resin (Red Cherry Bomb style) and VCG resins leads. They both have nice sets of glasspack style mufflers. Will be ordering several sets soon. Thanks folks for the leads. Edited December 10, 2015 by 69NovaYenko

It's just a regular dual muffler exhaust. I cut the mufflers out, saving the clamps, switched the head pipes(left to right, right to left, and put the glasspacks in. Since the pipes were switched, the heads of the pipes were cut off and I grafted in solder to run back up to the manifolds. I then weathered everything to hide that work.
426-Hemi Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 LOL how many ya want Greg? -I can machine those in about 2 minutes flat!
Rob Hall Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 IIRC the 80s issue of the MPC Barracuda had the glasspack header muffler style in the last photos of the multi photo grouping (w/ turned down tips)...don't know if the reissue that's coming has them, though.
dptydawg Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 This is a Cherry Bomb muffler that I turned out of a 5mm plastic knitting needle Carl
Snake45 Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I remember back in the late '60s, Corvair Turbo mufflers were also considered a "hot setup." Just sayin'.
Craig Irwin Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I remember back in the late '60s, Corvair Turbo mufflers were also considered a "hot setup." Just sayin'. Only for us sneaky types, the "look at me" guys loved the noise.
carnut Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 These also show up in the Revell-Monogram 1939 Chevy Coupe and Sedan Delivery. However like what was mentioned earlier some aluminum tubing will yield a Thrush style glass pack, I have done it several times. Just cut a piece to length and sleeve it over another piece that is smaller diameter and longer than your larger diameter piece.
Ford guy Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I make my own out of sprue. Yes some of it is large enough.
carnut Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Yup Ford guy, I have done that too, super easy to make aren't they.
