Brutalform Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I’ve ran out of my Model Master clear, and Testors one coat lacquer clear. I’ve used these with no problems whatsoever over Tamiya lacquer sprays. I have several cans of Tamiya clear I’d like to use up, but I’ve heard that if you don’t clear immediately after you lay down the Tamiya color, you should wait a few weeks due to the curing and gassing out at different rates. On this particular body, I used Tamiya gray primer, then a few coats of Tamiya maroon. Can anyone provide any info on this? This body was sprayed with color two days ago. Thanks.
martinfan5 Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 They say its you either need to do it in 30 minutes or wait a monthI have never followed that and have never had issues, Ive clear coated over Tamiya paint 24 hours later and no issues
espo Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I have always had the best luck with the Tamiya Clear and have never had any problems with time lines. Great looking Thunder Bolt.
kitbash1 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 I use a dehydrator to cure all the different paint types that I spray. After 24 hours in the heat, I clear coat my Tamiya paint with Tamiya clear. Never had any problems.
DiscoRover007 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 I think it should be fine. I usually start misting clear 30mins to an hour after the last color coat. It I laid down some heavy color coats then I’ll wait 24 hours at least. Just to prevent any sort of running.
vintagerpm Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 I've always waiting 5-7 days after the last color coat to use Tamiya clear. 30 days seems excessive to me.
Brutalform Posted November 20, 2017 Author Posted November 20, 2017 Thanks for the replies everyone. It’s been a few days now but it rained here where I’m at, so I’ll wait for a day without the moisture. I have several cans of the clear, but was always reluctant to use it, without waiting a long time. It does seem a bit weird that the two products by the same company would have a negative action with each other.

If you are doing a 2-tone finish with Tamiya paints, you should wait about a week between colors. Or even a week to add another coat of the same color (If its already been an hour or more). The paint will start curing shortly after being applied. It can take a week for the paint to cure completely. If you put another coat of paint on top before it is done curing, the new top coat can crack.
