Can-Con
Picked this Astro 1 up a couple years ago. Missing the engine and a couple other parts but I have enough to either build it curbside or sub in a different engine. Anyway, the stock wheels were one of the things missing, giving me a reason to swap out something more interesting than the original moon disks with bolt detail around the rim. My first choice was the mags from the amt '64 Cutlass. Pretty hard to come by, the re-release was announced a day or two after I got these ones from Steve G. My second choice was the mags from the AMT '65 Olds 88. Equally as hard to come by, My friend Steve Curbishly happened to have a set and cast me a few resin copies. Here they are with a quick finish with a molotow chrome pen. I wanted something "different" for wheels. I think my first choice is still the slotted wheels but by the time I finish this car, they may be pretty common. The smooth wheels are pretty cool and reflect the styling of the original wheels. So, what would you do?
Mr. Muppet
I think the second set of wheels might work better with the overall style of the Astro-1, but they're both good.
Snake45
Both are okay, but neither really spins my windmill. I'd keep looking. I don't have any suggestions, though, sorry. Are you going for more of a retro (period correct) or modern look?
Mark
I'd go with the '65 wheel castings, but not with a chrome or chrome-like finish. Maybe matte black center areas, or a magnesium finish.
89AKurt
Second choice, different enough for a show car. Engine, that's what is fun about building models, sky is the limit.

The second ones would do that , but , the first ones look "correct" on it too. I'm torn. ?
Richard Bartrop
Smooth fits the whole '60s future vibe of the car. Go with those.
garagepunk66
I'll go out on a limb and vote for your first choice in wheels, the custom ones from the 64 Cutlass annual. I think that they lend a more aggressive visual interest to the car, and maintain the mid-sixties vibe
Snake45
I think I have some custom wheels from a '70 Chevelle with six large holes in them that might look great on the Astro. If they sound interesting, I'll see if I can find them.
Plowboy
The second set suits the look of the model best IMO. Quite uncommon as is the model. But, it's yours and it has to suit you. Either set will work.
Deathgoblin
The top ones look good, but the bottom set looks better and fits the car.
MeatMan
Of the two, the second set is better but I personally think a set of turbine style wheels would be better w/o seeing them on the car anyway. I think that is should have an engine too. Something with a non-traditional intake. Nice project either direction you take it though. Not really a fan, but I have used a set on a model. I want to keep the '60s retro-future vibe with this one.
Nazz
Hi Steve, I would go with the '64 Olds wheels myself ,but the '65 wheels look the part too. If I were to use the '65 wheels I would do them in chrome or maybe magnesium Either of these wheels would give you the 60's look your looking for. I am not familiar with this car in particular so, if it is a show car ,then I would say go with the 64 wheels. If it is a competition vehicle then maybe the '65 wheels in magnesium might be better. My 2 cents.
Can-Con
Here's a couple shots of the real car for those not familiar with it. It's a GM prototype and It was based on a Chevy Corvair with a prototype overhead cam flat 6 engine. As you can see, it was a very small car. Also you can see how the second pic's wheels are very similar to the originals with a smooth dish and 8 bolts around the rim. I think I will go with those . 64SS350
After checking out this post, I decided to look into what I want to do for mine. Found these in my for sale pile, same height as original tires. Just need spinners... maybe.
