I'm looking for an AMT kit that has an automatic transmission I'd prefer a C4 or slightly earlier. I've got an AMT 302, so I'd like it to mate up without

a lot of modification ( don't mind doing some to the transmission tunnel.

The AMT '66 Fairlane and '67 Mercury Cyclone kits both have optional automatics as well.

No idea what model they are though.

Revell '64 Thunderbolt.

EDIT.

It appears that the AMT tranny is a C6.

Not sure about the Thunderbolt.

I may be wrong, but I think the C4 went on small block engines, and the C6 went on big block engines. There was also an FMX transmission, I believe, that might have been a two speed automatic.

What are you building? That may yield a clue as to what sort of kit to raid for a suitable automatic transmission ;).

It's a kitbash '67 Shelby GT 350, that I want to put in a 302 and want the automatic in it. Already have the 302 from another kit.

Yep, it'll be different.

So late 60's Fords will be candidates. I believe the automatic in the Fairlane kits represents a Sportshift Cruise-o-matic (C6) transmission. The one in the Revell Thunderbolt is likely a Lincoln automatic that was hung behind the big block 427.

^^ if an aftermarket resin piece interests you, may be cheaper than coming up with a kit with a suitable transmission to pilfer

I have a few of the automatics from the revell thunderbolt.

Yours for the asking if you need them

But i dont think they are a C4

The Revell '32 Fords have a SBF with an automatic. The trans pan has Metric in raised letters on it. Just have to sand those away.

Thanks, I've got one.

Thank you, I have a C4 and one from the Thunderbolt. Just need to see which will fit better. ?

The Thunderbolt transmission likely won't fit.  Don't use it anyway; it's a Lincoln transmission.  A fair number of them got swapped out for manual transmissions in 1:1 Thunderbolts...

The Lincoln automatic would be an "MX" trans ( Merc-O-Matic )  ; the "FMX" came along in 1968 , IIRC .

C4 = 1964

C6 = 1966

The trans marked as "Metric" is an AOD .

The C6 was made to fit both the 300 I6, 289-351 small block and 351C, the FE and the 335 family 351M-400 and 385 family 429-460, all have different bolt patterns.
The C4 was also found behind the FE and the 351M.
A little confusing but as I said, all these engines has different bolt patterns and you can't take a transmission from a FE and put it on a small block or 385 family engine and vice versa as the bell housing on the transmissions are different.

Is your build going to be period correct or a modified current day version? For a current day build the Revell motor from one of the 32 Ford kits is the way to go there are a bunch of intake options and a good automatic with overdrive. For a vintage build I would go with the 70s AMT Ford van transmission, it's a c6 with the correct small block Ford bellhousing. The Starsky & Hutch Torino is another option for small block automatic.

I searched for a C4 for a while and couldn't find anything. The closest things are the bellhousing from the Starsky & Hutch Torino, and the C3 in the AMT Pinto's. I took the C3 and made the center body longer, but had to make the rest from scratch. I have resin copies that are experiments(read; not perfect in any way), but could be made useable. The trans ended up a little on the long side, closer to 1/24 scale, but compared to the varieties of lengths I see for any given trans that are supposed to be the same, it looks fine in a 1/25 application.

I haven't made a pan yet.

You can see my pile of resin failures. My next project is a vacuum chamber. lol!

I saw a cheap vacuum pump at Harbor Freight I'm going to try. Usually they're pretty expensive, the HF one was like $36. They also sell a line of sealed cases like the Pelican cases. I want to check those out and see if I could cut the top and attach a piece of thick plexiglass. The sealed cases usually have a vent port, so that would be a good place to attach the vacuum line. Might be able to get the whole thing done for cheap. It will depend how well the case could hold up to the vacuum pressure.
