DougS
I was wanting to build this kit with just the body clear so i wondering if anybody knows if any of the other Monogram or Revell Monte Carlos would be a direct replacement for the Chassis and the rest of the kit? I know sometimes the same molds were used for other cars but I don't have any of the other kits of these brands to compare it to. I thought it would be easier to paint and modify a colored plastic rather than the clear.
wrenchr
There are two versions of those Monte Carlo's. That is the slab sided one. Just need to make sure of that. Edited January 24, 2022 by wrenchr
Shark
There is an Earnhardt that is a slab side, guess it was one of the last kits. The Labonte Kelloggs and Jeff Gordon both had slab side kits. Someone could verify this, but the last Gran Prixs (Hot Wheels, John Deere, Hamilton) should work too. On Randy Ayers forum, someone made a list of the two variations. Jonathan
I like your idea. Couldn't you just paint all of the non-body parts to accomplish what you're trying to do?
DougS
I may, but it seems to me the clear plastic is way more brittle to work with and harder to glue and the paint doesn't adhere as well as the colored styrene plastic.
Shark
The clear body is a slab side. I haven't seen you one before except your pictures. The earlier ones have a definite curve at the bottom. Look at Dale Jr. AC Delco car. You are doing the right thing by replacing the clear parts for painting. They will be less brittle and sanding mold lines is easier. DougS
Got a donor kit today. An exact match as far as the molding goes and a very slight difference in the sponsor decals. The decals have water damage so I may not even use them at all. The clear kit says it's the car driven midway through 1997 and the donor kit says it's the 1998 Daytona winner. The only differencr in the instructions are the color of the chassis and other color details. One has a red chassis and the other a grey one. I'll probably go with the red chassis because it should be more striking as seen through the clear body. Now I just need to find more reference photos and the time to actually get started. Thanks everyone for the replies for finding a slab side donor.
