MadKaw6 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Thought I'd submit a couple pictures of a couple of my current large scale projects. The Nova will be 1/16. I finally gathered the parts I need to build it with the exception of decals. I haven't decided on a name yet. It will be from the late 60s era. The chassis will be similar to a Logghe Phase II and will be powered by a blown big block Chevy. Thanks to Charlie from Pro Tech for the 1/16 parts he makes as this car probably would never get started without them. The other car is a 1/8 Corvette. I've owned this car since new. My mom bought it for me at a Green Stamp store in 1966. This will be the fourth revision for it and probably the last one. It is going to be a gasser type drag racer. I've finished the body work by extending the front a little over a scale foot. I'm going to use the interior that came with it as well as part of the frame. It will have a straight axle in the front. The engine will be from the Lindberg dragster kit.
Pro Tech Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi Frank, glad to see you decided to post these builds! I look forward to seeing both as you progress (especially the 1/16 Nova with all those parts in the pink haha.......) You will find there are alot of talented builder here in 1/16 land with alot of keen/cool ideas on building in this scale and I'm sure they would love to follow along also on your build! Thanks as always for your support of my products! and hope you enjoy this GREAT!!! forum. Charlie Pro Tech
Romell R Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 This looks like its going to be interesting , You surely have all the right stuff to get you started, but I think you may have just missed the 60's with this body, it looks to be the early 70-72 body type. I could be wrong but I thought Id point that out. Anyway welcome to the forums and get those pics posted.
Mooneyzs Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 These are going to be some great builds to follow. I look forward to watching them come together. Really excited about he 1/16th scale funny car. Welcome to the message board. We have a bunch of great and helpful guys here.
Howard Cohen Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 The 1/16th Nova is very interesting! Who makes the body? I would like one
MadKaw6 Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the comments. The Nova body is from Flashpoint Motorsports. I think you can also get one through Slixx. It is marketed as a 1969/1970 body.I think the body can be used for '69 to early 70s funny cars. It depends on whose car your building. It doesn't look like Jungle Jim's early Nova but it does look like Randy Wall's or Bobby Wood's. This one won't be a replica build anyway. I mostly like to build cars that are like something I would have raced back in the day. Edited January 27, 2012 by MadKaw6
MadKaw6 Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Finally got a chance to do a little on my Nova. It doesn't look like much but spent some time drawing the frame to scale and building a frame jig. I have the basic frame built and I've determined where I want the body to sit. The frame is similar to a Logghe Stage 1 chassis with a few minor changes. This funny car isn't going to represent any real cars so I'm building as I would have back in the day. I'll hang the suspension next and then start on the engine. No hemi for this car. It wil be powered by a big block Chevy.
Pro Tech Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Frank, looking good so far. Like your idea of dropping the hemi, we're talking "real old school" now. Charlie Pro Tech
MadKaw6 Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 A little more done. I have the rear and front axles fabricated and in place. It's not going too bad so far considering this car was a pile of tubing and parts a few weeks ago.
MadKaw6 Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 The rear axle is one that I resin cast from a Dukes of Hazzard kit. I did a few modifications to use it in this car. The front axle is scratchbuilt. Coilovers are my next project then I'll fit the big block Chevy.
iBorg Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 That's a great job on the frame. I really need to try my hand at one. Why plastic and not brass?
MadKaw6 Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 I don't have the knowledge, talent, or patience to work with brass. Besides that I make a lot of mistakes and have to redo stuff and its easier to fix plastic. The frame rails and front axle have brass rod inserted to make them stiffer.
Casey Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 then I'll fit the big block Chevy. Whose BBC are you using?
MadKaw6 Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 The basic engine is from Race Motor Replicas. I'll be using parts from Pro Tech and Competition Resins too.
MadKaw6 Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 (edited) A few updates on my Nova. I ended up rebuilding the rear of the chassis because it wasn't going to work the way I originally built it. I copied the rear of a Polar Lights frame because I couldn't find a good photo of a Logghe chassis and that didn't work out well. Anyway I replaced everything behind the roll cage plus moving the whole chassis forward a couple scale inches and lowering it the same amount. I made some coilovers and the required mounting points. The chassis can now sit on all four wheels. Edited May 4, 2012 by MadKaw6
MadKaw6 Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 I lowered the body a lttle bit too. It fits okay but I'll need to do a little trimming inside the body around the rear tires. I'll get started on the engine next.
