Volvoman Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 This is a model that I built a while ago when I was building a few tv and film cars. Herbie was built from a Tamiya VW Beetle using the hub caps from a Hasegawa samba bus and his racing stripes were made from solid decal. I used Halfords VW white spray paint on the body and bare metal foil was used on on the window frames, running boards and bodywork trim. The number decals were taken from the polar lights snap kit and the license plates were printed from the net. As usual, all comments are welcome and Herbie sends a Beep Beep!! Thanks for looking guys.
hemi Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Finally a herbie that dont look like a toy.Great job man it looks amazing.
Guest Johnny Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Cool looking Herbie! We have a little old lady driving an original 1:1 around the area here. She bought it brand new! They are sunbirds and head south evey fall with Herbie tagging along behind their motor home!
Tony T Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I'm a big Herbie fan (I'm building a 1:1 from a '67 Beetle-a longer term project than originally intended!) and you did a great job!!!
Lunajammer Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Herbie is like puppies, how can you not love it?
crazyjim Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I went to see a Herbie in my '66 Bug. The parking lot was a zoo when we were leaving and so I went over some grassy area. I heard somebody make the comment, "Does he think he's Herbie?" I don't know why I still remember that.
Foxer Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 The Tamiya was definitely the way to go on this .. well done!
MoparWoman Jamie Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I am Herbie fan myself, love the Walt Disney films. When I first saw the model here it popped out at me like as if I was looking at a real Herbie love bug car that was real!
slusher Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 looks more like herbie and not a toy. very good work...sharp..
Sam Cates Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Very cool! Of course any bugs and buses I see here are pretty bad ass! I had plans to build a Herbie, wasn't sure what kit to use since none of the available kits are quite right for an exact replica, but this one seems to fit nicely. I also want to build Horrace the hate bug.
meaneyme Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Great job on this, Tamiya does make a cool kit and the best!
Dominik Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 I love the Tamiya Kit - always gives me a smile on my face, when i see a beetle build. Nice Herbie
Zarana-X Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 The model and paint look excellent. [constructive criticism]But with the stickers from the Polar lights model, you could've had better luck with making your own. Also your stripes are a little off, The red is too narrow, and the blue is too wide. Also the stripe shouldn't have gone over the license plate light. [/constructive criticism]
Volvoman Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Thanks again for all your comments guys they really do mean a lot. I appreciate your comments Jason and totally accept them as constructive criticism, I suppose there were that many Herbies made for both film and promo work, no two were ever the same. My reference pics came from a book that i bought about TV and film cars and the pics that I used showed the stripes as I copied them onto the model so if they are'nt exactly correct, then I stand corrected. I genuinely do appreciate your comments and thanks for your interest.
chase-cars Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Years ago I made this one from an old Tonka toy I cleaned it up, painted it, created my own graphics and modified the bumpers Then I built this one, a little larger
jcbigpaw Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Nice build here. I'm sorry but I have to agree about the Polar Lights graphics. I have this same kit and first thing I did was toss the decals in the trash. You did a great job with what you had. Nice work
