om617 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Well,no more Alclad for me,it did not really impress me to begin with.
unclescott58 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 That's a really good review. The only thing I didn't get is what he painted on. After all, doesn't Alclad require a gloss black undercoat to correct results? What about the others? This was not clear to me. Scott

I've seen a lot of feed back on the Spaz Stixx over time. I think I'm gonna give it a try. If for no other reason, I won't have to clean out the airbrush afterwards! Steve
High octane Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I've used Spaz-Stix on both resin and plastic parts, and I'm happy with the results.
935k3 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I agree Spaztix looks better than Alclad. It doesn't have the blackish cast that Alclad does. It looks like he painted on pieces of ceramic tile.
Lownslow Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/diy-spray-on-chrome.674441/ this thread got my attention and found AG is a local business so ill be checking this product soon, expensive but the results are looking worth it.
jaymcminn Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Hmmm. I guess I'll have to try the Spaz-stix. That VHT looks like it might come in handy for polished aluminum too. I have good luck with Alclad but there's no harm in giving another product a shot.
unclescott58 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 So with Spaz Stix you need to put down a gloss black base like Alclad? Nick, since you've used it, tell us more. Is prep and buffing afterwords differ from using Alclad? any pictures of the end result? Scott
Ironman63 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 On the Spaz Stix site, it says that the mirror chrome is "specially formulated for Lexan". What primer would you need to use this on styrene or is it incompatible with styrene? Thanks.
gtx6970 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I've used the Duplicolor chrome paint before, It's not chrome but does give more a polished aluminum look I was after These interior tins were painted this way
om617 Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) As for my comment i can only speak for rattle can Alclad. I used really nice shiny black base before i put it on. Maby Alclad does a better job when using airbrush? But i`m still going to try Spaz Stix, the result on the test speak for itself. Also i dont see how it`s biased in any way. ChrisBcritter Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 It looks like he painted on pieces of ceramic tile. I think that may be foamcore.
cruz Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) The Alclad from the can can't be compared to the airbrush type. Spaz Stixx obviously is superior to Alclad in this form. Thank you very much for taking the time to show us these comparisons. I am currently working on a flatbed right now and I am looking to purchase a can of the best chrome paint for the bed since I will not be using the Alclad to airbrush that huge of a surface. This video gives me a good idea which one to buy! Edited September 23, 2014 by cruz
crazyjim Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks for the comparisons Tommy. Very interesting results.
unclescott58 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I still am interested in hearing from somebody who has actually used Spaz Stix before. I know lots of guys who use Alclad with good results. And from them, I know how to use and apply Alclad. I'm cautious using something new, until I've heard from somebody who has actually tried it. Scott
crazyjim Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I've used Spaz Stik in the rattle can and found the results to be pretty good and easier than Alclad. I just placed an order for the air brush version of Spaz Stik.
Mike_G Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 "Eugene toy and hobby, how can I help you?" "Hi, I'm looking for spaz-stix, do you have any there?" "No, all our employees are normal."
Jon Haigwood Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks for the comparison. Just getting back into the hobby I have never used any of these products but I have been trying to find something to repaint Blowers Scoops and other small parts that I have to redo do to bare spots from the parts tree and the grooves where the two piece parts come together.I have been using Spaz since it was all the store had in stock. For me it works OK as long as I have the surface smooth with no scratches or bumps. It does not duplicate chrome perfectly but seems to leave a surface that more represents polished aluminum which closer to what the real parts are made from.I believe that the only to perfectly duplicate chrome is with chrome.A small spray can of Spaz for $11/$12 is a bit high so I will be using it sparingly.
Exotics_Builder Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Very useful. I have experimented with a couple and was just thinking of Spaz Stik,

We've carried Spaz-Stix R/C paint off and on at my HTU and while we were still sellingmoff the first batch we had gotten in, a customer spotted it and no joke nearly had a meltdown over the paint being called that?! I've often wondered if she called my boss to complain and that that's why it had been several years before we got our next batch of it in or if that was just the old store owner doing the typical "if it sells, but not like hot cakes, don't order more of it, but maybe use that money for something we still haven't been able to sell at a steep discound instead" deals........
crazyjim Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 So Jim, what did you put down for a base? If anything? Scott I've brushed on Testors gloss black, sprayed Testors gloss black, black primer covered with Krylon gloss clear, Alclad gloss black. It doesn't seem to matter as long as it's enamel under the Spaz Stik or Alclad.

curt raitz Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 (edited) I've been using the "Spaz-Stik" Chrome outta the can for over 10 years know. I have tried Alclad in the can and air brush...still keep going back to the Spaz-Stik Chrome, easier to use and seems to be more durable than Alclad I prefer spraying it over Tamiya's TS-55 Dark Blue instead of gloss black The chrome finish is a little cooler over the blue, over a black base - it's a little to harsh & dark for me. As far as primer goes...I would use the primer best suited to your base coat. Spaz-Stik doesn't really care what the primer is... Edited September 24, 2014 by curt raitz
JPolli Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 A big THANK YOU for posting something like this. I think I speak for many who frequent this sight.
