  1. Its sad to hear of his and his planes passing. It will be interesting to see what the FAA determines the cause. Unfortunately from the reports I have read so far it sounds like a classic stall spin. As a fellow pilot I can only hope that I too can pass doing something I enjoy doing.
  2. I am just getting back into the hobby in a bigger way and some of the things I have noted. 1. We used to make plug wires with Thread we "borrowed" from the sewing machine. 2. Now they have fully wired Distributors that all you need to do is drill the spark plugs out and put the wires in. 3. WE had one type of glue. Then it went that sickening orange scent because of all my friends that were "huffing" it. 4. Airbrushes were "exotic". Heck dad painted a 1:1 car with a Sears tank-less sprayer. I still have the wheelbarrow he painted at the same time. 5. Nice kits are expensive. But they have detail and realism that was unheard of in the old days. I could go on and on. Do we need this stuff to build a decent model? probably not. Do they make building kits more expensive? Definitely. Should it scare new modelers away? Probably not as much as the intimidation factor that new-by's develop if they see some experienced modelers and their work. (Harry P, your work continues to amaze me and yes its intimidating in a challenging kind of way). IMHO The major problem is not the cost. Its the way society view leisure time activities. You need to be on your phone (which your parents got you when you turned 6 yo) or computer all your waking hours. just sitting and working on something that gives you a sense of accomplishment isn't the popular thing to do. You need to have something all your electronic "Friends" can give you a "like" when you do anything. Will the hobby die? Not to sound morbid but probably, It will definitely slow down and have a smaller group of enthusiasts as we get older, can't see and eventually pass on. There will be some new blood but not in the numbers we remember. I have several 1:1 classic cars and that hobby will is passing away also. Hopefully I will be gone before my hobbies and they will have dignified deaths also.
  3. Sounds like fun. Need to see if they will be touring around here. If you ever get to this side of the pond you need to hit the Motown museum in Detroit. It will amaze you how they made so many great songs with basically no electronics or equipment.
  4. I've already told my kids that some of the models in my stash are worth $50-$100 on the open market. Don't give them away.
  5. I have the both original and the Blue printer edition. Hearing about the re-issue I may leave them in their boxes and try the new one. I do have a set of minilite wheels with tires that would look good on it though
  6. and if you or your spouse is vertically challenged and you need the seat close to the steering wheel I feel for you if you have an accident. A friend from work had a relatively minor impact that set the bag off. They ended up black and blue from the waist to the chin. Seems the airbags are designed to work at a certain (nominal) distance. They were closer so they could reach/operate the vehicle and paid the price.
  7. Google your vehicle along with Takada Most manufacturer sites will ask for your cars Vin
  8. Interesting, the Mercedes and the VW in the stable have no recall. Maybe I'm just lucky. Update: Just checked again and I guess it is only the 2011 and older Mercedes and VW was not affected. Looks like the German cars made with airbags made in Germany are OK (still made by Takata though). Thanks for the info though. I still do not want squibs that close to me. Been working around high explosives 40 years and can't justify the risks.
  9. Ya gotta LOVE Takata... They make most of the airbags for most of the cars plus the ones for new production cars. There just isn't enough hardware out there to replace everything at once. That's the nice thing about my German cars. Takata didn't make the bags. Food for thought, I never have figured out how having an explosive (squib) 12 inches from your face makes you safer..
  10. Realize that in a real Tiger the front cross member protects the oil pan and there is very little ground clearance. In fact the exhaust system runs through the x-member not under it. I watched one you tube video where they took out the plastic spacer and the oil pan is way too low. Realistically you need to raise the spindle height.
  11. gee last night at 11:00 pm it was 82 degrees and 82% humidity. i love the south, nothing dries out ?
  12. When I get a hankering for roast beef there is nothing better than an Arby's triple meat. Never put sauces on it just tons of meat on a bun.
  13. Fantastic Tiger. for future builds there is a very nitpick detail, I think the SCCA rules says the shoulder harness needs to be attached to the bar but not 100% sure. I wouldn't change it though. Its great as it is...
  14. Very nice model! Hope you get a set of "under ride" traction bars soon. The wheel hop will shake out your fillings otherwise.
  15. I have an automatic for the DD. The 5 speed is for having fun (no computer systems in that car). and the 3 speed non synchronized is for profiling. I have yet to have a blow out experience at 70mph, but I have spun two different cars on the interstate at 70+mph. Not totally my fault, people around here don't look when they merge they just change lanes in front of you. I kinda like the pucker and hold on experience. Keeps me young.
  16. its in that place called Ohio. isnt it? why should the public care? Fix your roads first! ?
  17. To me the question is "What happens in the transitional phase"? New autonomous cars are developed and put on the road. People buy them and use them. Something happens and they have to "Borrow" a car for daily use. The borrowed car has no self drive and the driver gets a phone call and forgets that minor fact.. A very likely scenario in the new generation. Could make for interesting times. But I'm still waiting on my "Jetsonmobile" folding car.
  18. and as to the Manual shifting. Learned to drive on a pickup with three on the tree. now have a car with a 5 speed and a car with a 3 speed non synchronized. Its fun double clutching too.
  19. I don't think we will ever see totally autonomous cars. Every city in the country would go broke if there were no traffic violations. A computer operated car by definition would obey the rules that are programed in it. If the program code was set to violate the law who would be at fault. couldn't be the " rider". Therefore the car would "Never" violate a speed limit, red light, stop sign etc..
  20. Someone at a much higher pay grade than mine explained to me that the early Tesla systems were Optical and the truck was white. The optics could not discern the truck from the sky so it sensed no danger. Now the cars also use a radar/sonar style recognition system that is "Supposed" to prevent this. I still do not like driving anything that the steering wheel does not connect to the wheels on the ground, or something that has my life in its hands with no human input.
  21. Roadkill has a "youtube" channel. Finnegan started his own channel also after leaving California and moving to Georgia.
  22. Love this car. Built it back in the 70's as a kid. Don't know which company made it. I was doing research and learned the team had to change the name of the car due to "Motown" being a registered trademark of some record company.
  23. Wish you well with whatever they find. Not knowing is the worst feeling. with medicine nowadays there is a high degree of succes with whatever you need. As one that has almost as many man made joints as originals there is a path forward. Good luck..
  24. If you need help setting up something I work cheap. Just need an airline ticket to that paradise half way around the world.
