What are the must-build classic kits?
Jonathan replied to OldNYJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Definitely agree on the Monogram 59 Cadillac! I'll add a few that may not be everyone's cup of tea: Monogram (Revell) S-10 / Syclone (not the 1/20 Lindberg kit, either) Monogram Cobra 427 AMT Cobra 289 AMT 55/ 57 Cameo Monogram 37 Ford pickup Tamiya Lotus Super 7 (the 1/24 version) -
Looks really sharp in that color!

International Scout Family

OK, I know this is an older post, but WOW! Juergen, Do you have any build photos of this beauty? -
I was starting to feel pretty good about the ol' Scout and felt like I was nearing the end. I used my Mk. I wheel alignment jig and was pretty happy with the wheel alignment: The front bumper and winch from the now defunct Olson Bros. Scout II upgrade set: Nearing completion, I realized the interior tub was pulled a bit away from the body. Nothing a cheap clamp and some Tamiya thin cement won't fix: Next, I scratched up some decals. Bear in mind, I have never created decals before. Side commentary here: In honor of my brother-in-law who gave me the kit for Christmas (2022), I created "Dave's Surf Shack": After a few coats of Tamiya clear lacquer, I put the decals on the Scout, only to realize that 1) I didn't trim the clear close enough to the lettering on the door, and 2) the decals immediately curled over themselves. So, lots of working with the decals to get them to mostly lay down, and I decided to dirty up the model a bit in an effort to maybe hide the not-so-great decals. But ... tragedy! In my own clumsiness, I managed to knock the Scout off the bench and onto the concrete floor of the garage. Ugh! So ... realizing I wasn't really super happy with the way the model was sitting (even though the wheels were parallel from left to right, they did not all four touch the ground), I'm looking at this as an opportunity to make better decals and to hopefully fix the ride height. Unfortunately, the rear bumper (also part of the Olson set) took a real hit in the fall. Hopefully I can salvage it. *sigh*

I have the Olsen Brothers front bumper and winch, along with the rear step bumper. (No commentary - and I hope things work out for him). Unfortunately, I knocked the nearly completed scout off my bench and the rear step bumper is pretty much destroyed. That, and the lifted suspension I had cobbled together. So, seeing as I need to make some significant repairs - does anyone know of either aftermarket parts (bumpers, etc.) that are currently available, or even 3d files that would be available? (My local hobby shop has several 3d printers, which is pretty cool). thanks in advance

Ages ago, I found an Alps MD-1000 for sale locally and grabbed it. The previous owner was frustrated with it and had moved on to whatever he thought was a better printer (and I can see where you'd want something else for daily printing). Fast forward to 2024 and I actually got the thing to work! I'm running a Windows 7 (32-bit) virtual machine on a Windows 11 workstation and using a USB-to-parallel printer cable with bidirectional communication disabled. I've loaded a 32-bit version of Inkscape on the VM. After much experimentation and spending quite a bit of time on the groups.io Alps board (is "board" the right word?), I successfully did a test print tonight and was even able to print from Inkscape. I'm excited! So ... on to the question. What decal paper can I use with this? I want to print on clear paper as much as possible. Do I want paper designed for a laser printer or for an ink jet printer? Is anyone on this board actually using an old Alps printer now? Thanks in advance for any insight.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad. Love what you've done with all of the awesome custom parts in this build.

Belly Tanker
Jonathan replied to slownlow's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Nice craftsmanship. I agree with others on the truck - that work seems like some of the older stuff I remember seeing around my Granddad's farm - everything was purpose built. Really enjoying seeing the belly tanker. In the picture where the guy is sitting in a belly tanker - are those zip ties (!) holding those lines along the left side of the cockpit? When did zip ties come into existence? Such a cool build - definitely worth following. -
Nice work so far!

That's so cool! Do you have links to the various aftermarket suppliers you used? I've heard of Detail Junkies, but not the others. -
That looks really nice!
