Scale I Build

  1. Started as a Christmas gift this season. Tried some new techniques and different paints. Attempted to watch quality control. Tried to complete the model as quickly as reasonable -3.5 weeks is a record for me. this a great kit with excellent fits. And was on sale at HL so the wife liked that part ?
  2. C1 resin trans kit but I didn't us the interior as it left no room for an engine. Since its a van I used a late model aircooled engine from the t3 bus so its double the usual horsepower for a beetle and a lower engine so the floor isn't too high. Speaking of the floor it a very heavily modifed one from the t3 camper so i could use the engine bay. I've also modifed a set of 70s beetle bumpers to look like early golf gti bumpers. I'm not sure what the wheels are from but they are heavily modified at the rear for maximum dish. Its also slammed but I'm sure you expected that, lol. So thats the 5th vw project i have on the go just now and i think I've managed to keep them all different enough to keep them interesting
  3. Alrighty then, Besides being in the "shelter in place" mode, we are in the midst of having our house remodeled ?. While moving everything from one place to another, I pulled out a couple of models my daughters built way back when. They were 10, and 12 at the time (28, and 30 now), and surprised me by wanting to build a model car. We went to the LHS, and they picked out matching vw bug snapper kits. All of the building was done by them, including the rattle can paint, and base materials. The light pole, and the brick street sheeting came from the model railroad shop, and the surfboard came from a souvenir shop on the Redondo Beach pier. Really was proud of the way their bugs turned out, and glad I've kept them all this time. All comments/criticism/threats are welcome, and encouraged. Mark
  4. Work In Progress Thanks to everyone who stopped by! Glad that GSL picked the Tamiya VW Beetle for the Common Kit. I've entered that category three times. I suspect there will be more entries than ever because everyone loves Bugs! I'm calling this FROZEN IN TIME, a tribute model of the 1960 Beetle my parents had before I was born. I'm into weathering my builds, this is extreme without having any rust. But I took some pictures before I ruined it. LOL There are some things I'm not happy with, but oh well, IT'S FINISHED! I detailed the engine, though the lid will be closed all the time except at shows. Question to everyone who built this, the front hood is a tight fit and challenge to get opened? I reworked the engine lid hinge, no toothpick required to stay open.

Mentioned after the Kodiak Lumina, that my next car build would definitely not be any sort of race-car, so keeping my word here's Tamiya's gorgeous little 1966 1300 Beetle wearing Tamiya Mica Red & Light Gunmetal (TS-42). Decals are from the RoG Beetle and are superb. As ever please feel free to make any comments, hurl any abuse or ask a question. Next build will have wheels, but will also fly, so probably won't be seen here at MCM. Until next time... Ian.
  6. Here's my next hover vehicle. It's a 1968 vintage VW Beetle with some Diesel Punk flair. I had planned to make a jet board (instead of a surf board) to go on the roof rack. This proved to be difficult, only because I can't seem to come up with a jet board that will match the ascetic of the car. For now it's just a cool roof rack that turned out 100% better than I had imagined! I just finished this model about an hour ago. I quickly took some photos using a homemade cardboard light box. Got the photos on the computer and realized that I weathered everything on the model, except for the antennae and the frame of the license plate. These were the last two items that were scratch built today. In my excitement to finish, I forgot the weathering process.....I'll get some more photos up soon. Under the front hood is the fuel tank and some random loose wires. Under the engine cover........huge intakes. Very fun build. Thanks for looking!
  7. For admirers of the VW Beetle Type 1 engine, here is a new resin kit that has just been released this year. Looks pretty cool. www.theweedub.com Here are some pics. Enjoy
