am73grand Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Ever since I was a kid I have wanted a model of Ponch's Firebird. While looking for Firebird parts for a buddy I found this. I totally forgot I had it. All the body work was done, I just needed to paint it and build the interior. There is an engine but it's not detailed. It's only in there so there's something in case it gets flipped over. This is an original MPC 70-71 Trans Am with a Formula hood modded with the shaker. Wheels/tires are from the Baldwin Motion AMT 70 Camaro with Shabo lettering. Paint is Model Master Dark Bronze Metallic lacquer with enamel clear. The real car was ALL bronze except for the lights and back bumper. I added the chrome trim on the windows just to make it pop. The real car: That passenger side light really fought me......it's in as good as it gets. Thanks for looking!!!!
BirdWatcher Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Cool build! If I remember right, Ponch bought it for 83 bucks. He rolled up on the burning car and put out the fire himself. He had a little bidding war with a tow truck driver, but won. I think Bonnie steals it in a later episode. Here's a link....http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_50077-Pontiac-Firebird-Formula-1971.html
Lovefordgalaxie Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 It's being so long since the last time I've watched the series I don't even remember Poncherelo having a Poncho, what is a nice match. I think you nailed it, the model is very well executed and looks just like the picture.
Maindrian Pace Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Great job. The car, originally all black, was used in Corvette Summer. -MJS
am73grand Posted April 24, 2015 Author Posted April 24, 2015 Thanks everyone. I really had a blast building this one!
philo426 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Awesome!I remember watching Chips as a kid and the bronze color is choice!Great job!
Rdkingjay Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 LOVED that car and series. Great job on your model.
disabled modeler Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 NICE...! Now if I could just get them to make a kit of the 75 Firebird or TA.
Rotorbolt73 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Great build! I have a question about the tires..The lettering on them..Is that a decal on them? or are the letters molded into the tire and hand painted? If those are decals, I'd really like to know where you can get them. I need a set of BF Goodrich tire lettering for my wraith corvette build.
