JollySipper
This is going to be my first ship model! It's the 1/196 Revell U.S.S. Constitution, I was so excited about getting it, that I started on it immediately..... My main reason for putting up a WIP is that I'll have a lot of questions as I go....... This is a couple days in, feel free to tell me what you think.....!!
Jim B
The hull looks nice so far. What did you use for the copper plating? Looks like gold.
JollySipper
Hey, friend.... The gold color doesn't look very realistic for copper, does it? Maybe there is a way to tone it down some? I'm open to suggestions...... Accurate or not, I'm having lots of fun! I'm mounting the lower cannons now.........
Jim B
I'm no expert ship modeler, but I'm thinking for this scale (1/196) your best bet is Testors Copper paint. Maybe with a black wash or Dul-Coat to tone it down a little. Here is the Testors Copper on the deflector dish of my 1/2500 USS Enterprise. I think it will fit the bill for what you're looking for. JollySipper
Here I have the deck pretty much finished....... still some touch-up to do. I had to use a pin vise on the holes for the cannon barrels, as they were too tight a fit....... Again, it's probably not accurate, but I'm having a blast....!! Thanks for looking in! JollySipper
I've got the main parts of the ship's body together! Sorry if the pics are a bit blurry..... Thanks for looking, and feel free to comment.........!!
Jim B
The hull is coming along nicely.

JollySipper
Well, guys, I've made it through step 8! I will get pics as soon as I can..... but, I have a quick question. Should I glue this down to it's base now that it's time to start on the masts? I haven't yet so I could handle it easier....... It's been a little work, but I'm still having fun with it! Nice change from building just cars..............

JollySipper
Thanks, Dan! Yours looks really good. Mine is a lot smaller scale than yours. There are three more lifeboats, but only one on the deck, the rest hang over the side..... The rigging is broken down into two parts, Basic and detailed, maybe I'll try both parts of the rigging......
kpnuts
Looks really great so far I did this ship when I was in my late teens as I remember it builds into a lovely ship. I've just discovered guilding and I know they do copper leaf have you thought of using that it's dead easy and of course if you wet it being actual copper you would get a very real look. Now I've done some guilding I will use metal leaf wherever I need a real metal look.

JollySipper
Here's the front mast standing! It's not glued in place, yet....... A question for anyone who has built this, would it be easier to tie the sails to the yards before I stand the masts? I was looking through the instructions, and it says to stand all the masts, then tie the sails, but that looks to be pretty difficult........... Interested to hear what you have to say, and thanks for looking in........!!
kpnuts
I think you might want to do some of the standing rigging before you add the sails as I would be quite difficult after the sails are added so I would suggest glue them in first. But hey its your model do it you're way.
Jim B
I agree with Ken, Standing rigging, sails, running rigging. Good luck. It's looking really nice. Edited June 16, 2015 by Jim B
JollySipper
Thanks, Ken and James......... I'll do as the instructions say and as you guys say. Learning as I go that this isn't a car model, and it's best to follow the order suggested.... Thanks again......!!
philo426
What I did with my Thermopylae as to mount the foremast, tie the ratlines, put on the standing rigging and shrouds and then tied the sails to the yards off of the model. Then I mounted the yards up then did the running rigging. JollySipper
Here is the masts all standing....!! I also ran the basic rigging. The color of the photos is way off, but it was the only way I could capture the rigging well..... Feel free to comment, it's always appreciated.......! Yep, I checked my copy of the Anatomy book, and sure enough, most of the lifeboats are suspended outside the hull. It's been so long that I looked at my own Constitution model (1:96 Revell kit), that I had forgotten all about it. JollySipper
Is "Anatomy of the Ship" a series of books? or is there just the one on the U.S.S. Constitution?
Roadrunner
Is "Anatomy of the Ship" a series of books? or is there just the one on the U.S.S. Constitution? It's a series, and there are dozens and dozens of them. Naval Institute Press is the publisher. I currently have several books from the series.
