russosborne Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I did try searching as Harry posted, but I probably didn't use the right search words. This is for the old Revell kit that was released most recently as the Ed Roth car. Yes, I know, but this is a nostalgia thing for me. I was 9 when the 1968 release came out and that was when I built it. I thought that this trim was stainless but I am not sure. If it is, apparently the Bare Metal Foil people don't make any in stainless, I had thought they did several years ago, but I am probably wrong. Anyway, it is not listed on their online site. So what can I do to make this look reasonably realistic? I can't afford the Model Car Garage PE kit for the AMT 57, even if that would work. Since they don't list this kit I have to believe they know what they are talking about. Should I use a chrome foil? Metallizer paint? Something else? This isn't for any sort of contest, just something I want to redo from my youth as well as I can now. Thanks, Russ
1930fordpickup Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Just use the Bare Metal Foil . It may not be right but it will look good when you are done.
russosborne Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Thanks. That is my gut instinct, I just want to make sure I am not missing something else. Russ
dodgefever Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 The trim was stainless, but the ribbed inserts on the rear quarters were aluminium.
Tom Geiger Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Crummy photo of a model that I started a long time ago and never finished. But the side trim was done by first spraying the insert with Testors Silver, and then Bare Metal Foiling the trim around it.
StevenGuthmiller Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I use "Polished Aluminum" Alclad for that sort of thing now. Works great! When I built this '57, I just foiled the whole thing & then brush painted the insert with Testors Dullcoat. Easy way to do it, & I think it looks fine. Steve
Mark Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I did one of the Revell kits last summer; on it I did the "washboard" area with the matte aluminum Bare-Metal Foil, and the rest of the trim with the regular chrome finish foil. Painting the washboard area with aluminum silver would work too. You're looking for something of a contrast between the anodized aluminum insert, and the polished stainless trim.
russosborne Posted July 4, 2015 Author Posted July 4, 2015 Thanks! Sounds like a few options I can do to consider. Didn't know the whole thing was not stainless. Russ
Snake45 Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Another way is to use household foil and Micro Metal Foil Adhesive. Use the dull side for the insert, and the bright side for the stainless.
russosborne Posted July 4, 2015 Author Posted July 4, 2015 Another good workable for me option. Thanks! Russ
