DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Starting a new project since the Diamond Reo is finished. I haven't built a pickup in over 12 years, but here goes. Trying to get the warped cab straightened out right now (you can see that the cab is wet). The plan is this: 71 Ford pickup 4x4, not settled on tires yet, but they will be big; I'm leaning toward the 46" Swampers. Power will be from a 6v-71 Detroit courtesy of the Back yard shed. I haven't fully decided whether it will be a turbo or not. Not sure if I can pull off what I have in mind or not, but this is a build that I have been wanting to try.
Superpeterbilt Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 That outa fill up that engine compartment. What are you thinking for a gear box?If you need axles or a transfer case, I may have them. Just let me know.

I have Dana 60s coming from BNL resins along with a transfer case and some 48" Irok Super Swampers. This Detroit's going to have a long way to drip. I plan to use transmission out of the Louisville with a divorced transfer case set up. I was going to use a granny box, but I thought this would be the more likely fit to the Detroit. I don't have all the parts in hand yet to test it all out, but that is the plan. Putting the engine together now to test my clearances. My concern is this warped up cab!?! Thanks for the offer though....Brian
Superpeterbilt Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Sounds good. Be sure to reinforce that frame, or you'll twist it up!
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 It's going to be a tight fit, but with a little bit of butter it is going to work.
guitarsam326 Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Glad to see you starting this one Brian! I think its gonna turn out great, cant wait to start mine!
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 Factory cross members removed. Two new cross members made for engine and transmission mounting purposes. Louisville transmission mated to the 6v-71. Off to a decent start. My axles should be here tomorrow and I can start fabricating son\me suspension.
1972coronet Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Very cool project ! I've seen videos of "1:1" swaps similar to this ; one of which was a 1976 GMC which received a 3-53 / H.D. truck trans .You going to paint that engine Alpine Green ?
guitarsam326 Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Crossmembers look good Brian, i may have to try that on mine. Plakit offers a heavy duty manual trans i think im gonna order a few of those to try out.....if not, mine will recieve a fuller ten speed!

Thanks for the comment and encouragement John.Crossmembers look good Brian, i may have to try that on mine. Plakit offers a heavy duty manual trans i think im gonna order a few of those to try out.....if not, mine will recieve a fuller ten speed!I'm a straight gear man myself too. Most of my vehicles are straight drives. On this build, like most of my builds, it is an experiment. I had the Louisville trans, so I just went with it. Thought that I would do something different. Depending on where this build goes, I though that an automatic would be better for mud bogging. Now a ten speed in a pickup will be different for sure. Looking forward to seeing that one myself. Thanks for thew encouragement Sam!
guitarsam326 Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Automatic for sure in a mud bogger, dont let those wheels quit spinnin! Cant wait to see how she progresses Brian!
Custom10 Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Looks like it's coming together well. Nice progress!
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Some progress today. Axles arrived from BNL Resin. Those are assembled. One rear leaf spring made. Notice the difference between the one on the truck and the stock one on the desk.<a href="http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/brotherbrian1/media/100_2257_zpsguqgbzwg.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q575/brotherbrian1/100_2257_zpsguqgbzwg.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 100_2257_zpsguqgbzwg.jpg"/></a>Thanks for the comments!!!!!
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 The springs are made and hangers mounted. The frame is re-enforced, not so much because of the raw 238 horsepower that this engine will produce if it remains naturally aspirated, but because of the added 1500lbs. over the FE Big Block that it brings with it. Still experimenting.
Superpeterbilt Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Nice mods to the frame. It looks like the real deal
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Removed heater box and lower section of firewall because of clearance issues. Front axel with fabricated knuckles installed. Transfer case installed. Ready for some tires to arrive.
guitarsam326 Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 (edited) Lookin good Brian, are you gonna do a remote mounted radiator or will the radiator fit in its normal location? I know that fan is a monster too! Edited September 11, 2015 by guitarsam326
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 I'm planning on an electric fan either way. I'm going to refabricate a lower section for the fire wall and then decide about the radiator. If I can leave the engine slid back where it is in the picture, I think that I can squeeze in a radiator. It is going to need a large transmission cooler as well. I had told you that I was also going to add a body lift, but with the suspension that I already have, I may not. I will be able to tell more when the tires get here. I've been toying with many ideas. I've got the turbos off of the Tyrone Malone truck, and considered trying to squeeze twin turbos under the hood or at least under the fenders. This is one build that I do not have a clear vision of where it is going to end up. Just enjoying the build. Put together a couple of 1:1s back in my younger days, but this way is much cheaper.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 After a painting disaster on the engine, It is now green. Decided to up the horsepower a little and now it is going to be a 6v-71TT (Twin Turbo). Steering linkage is on font axel. I've had a set back on my tires. Hoping to find some 48" tires, but if not I may go with 44"s.
Superpeterbilt Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) Looks good! You could get away with putting some 66"s on it Edited September 14, 2015 by Superpeterbilt
