RandyB. Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) Bought this one several years ago and was thinking about building this one next while I'm on a Cadillac roll. Original 1957 tooling and it doesn't look like a very good kit. Not fussy on the multipiece body, plastic tires and lack of defined trim lines to foil on. Hmmmm, not sure if I'm up for the challenge but I think I'll take a stab at it! Here's what I'm aiming for. Edited October 1, 2015 by RandyB.
StevenGuthmiller Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) This kit is pretty bad! Not only is the detailing bad, but it looks as if the body is out of proportion to me. Looks too be way to short & wide. Strange. The multi piece bodied 1/32nd kits that Revell did during this time looked pretty good compared to this one. I'd kill for a new tool of a 50s Caddy! I'll be extremely impressed if you can make it look anything like the photo you posted! Good luck Randy! Steve Edited September 26, 2015 by StevenGuthmiller
cobraman Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I have seen a few that ended up looking pretty good. Good luck, me thinks you have your work cut out for you. : )
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) Here's a couple that look pretty good, and should help you to see some of the potential pitfalls with this one. I love the car, but this kit seems to me (I have 2) to be more a great basis for a custom than a replica-stocker. Still, I believe some time and TLC can produce an outstanding stock model from it. MrObsessive Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Wow! I'd say you've got your work certainly cut out for you Randy! Every body panel on that kit would need to be modified in some way to make it close to the pic you have. It's almost as if the engineers tooled that car from memory and not the blueprints they would have had access to back in those days. I'll certainly be following along as this is my favorite Cadillac of the '50's.
Ramfins59 Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) I agree with all of the good luck wishes on your project Randy. I bought one of these kits about a year or so ago and every time I opened the box and saw the multi-piece body I just closed up the box again. I wound up getting a '57 Caddy Franklin Mint diecast on EBAY for a cheap price to put in my "Class of '57 collection". There's a little "paint rash" on the doors which I'll get around to fixing one day. Edited September 26, 2015 by Ramfins59
gtx6970 Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I have been thinkign I want one of these to build for myself. But every time I see one it looks out of proportion to me.I know Johan did a 1958 and I think I may go that route myself. which is a shame the 57 Is a very nice looking car
MrObsessive Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Johan did a '58 Caddy Sixty Special (I have one)-----two totally different cars. Revell's the only kit maker that I've ever seen do the Eldo Brougham, although if memory serves, I believe Gunze did one in 1/32 some years ago.
Bob Ellis Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 There is hope to build this model. Cut the bottom sides off the frame and glue to the top sides.Make the frame separate

charlie8575 Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 There was an article in MCM a year or two back about how the Revell kit got flubbed. A lot of mis-communication between Revell and GM and running changes in the Brougham program. Result: oops.I'd very much like a modern tool of this in 1/25 scale. I think it has the potential to be a pretty decent seller. Charlie Larkin
Nick Notarangelo Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Take a stab at it and really test your skills.
RandyB. Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) Update on the '57 Eldo. Sanded the rough spots out of the body last night and then gave it a wash to remove oils from the surface. Primed and painted today using Tamiya Gloss Black spray. Interior will be light grey and turquoise. Edited September 27, 2015 by RandyB.
Modlbldr Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 You are off to a great start! Looking good. I'll be watching...and like most others, I would love some 1/25 50's Caddys.Later-

A very interesting story it was! Too bad no one's seen fit to do this car justice as they are VERY rare, and was actually THE most expensive American car one could buy in 1957-58. RandyB. Posted September 28, 2015 Author Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) Got the side panels foiled and a few others odds and ends done. Edited September 28, 2015 by RandyB.
charlie8575 Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Randy, you're doing the best you can to make this as good-looking a model as possible. And it's workingCharlie Larkin
Sledsel Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Looking forward to this ones progress. I have this kit "semi-started" I cut the floor out of mine so I could assemble the body and fill the seams.Detailing looks great.
Lunajammer Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Glad to see you're not derailed by the unfaithful. The kit does have, shall we say, personality. But some of its details are lovely and I enjoyed building mine. Though I don't enter it in contests, I do display it and it's always a popular conversation starter. Gotta go with Ace in saying there's a lot of custom potential.
restoman Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 I just bought this kit at an auction for $16.Watching this build closely...
RandyB. Posted September 29, 2015 Author Posted September 29, 2015 Thanks guys. Spent the whole day foiling the interior parts of this chrome hog. I decided to go with a black/gray interior rather than my initial turquoise/gray.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 All your careful detail work is looking really good.

I got the Franklin car years ago, and had to completely repaint BOTH doors...whoever was in charge of painting these forgot to clean the doors before painting!! and it flaked off like it was water colors. But testor's bottle black did the trick, it looks fine. Don't be afraid to strip and repaint!!!
RandyB. Posted September 29, 2015 Author Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) Update pics on the 1957 Eldo. Sat the roof on loose just to see how it will look. Yup....I'm liking it. Edited September 29, 2015 by RandyB.
Bob Ellis Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Considering all the bad things that people have said about this kit, this build sure looks good and shows that it can be made nice. These kits can be found at model shows for $12-15 which is a good deal.
