Hi all:

I'm going to try the Tamiya spray fine light gray primer for the first time.  The instructions on the can specify:  "spray 2 or 3 thin coats".

Do you guys normally do this with this primer?  Or blast it in one coat ?  I'm priming a truck engine assembly, not a body.

If so, how long do you normally wait between coats ?

Thanks

Tamiya Fine Primer dries really fast. Dry to the touch in minutes. There is no need to blast it on. It goes on very thin, but covers well. It does not take a lot to do the job. So yes, two or three thin coats, over the course of 10 or 15 minutes is all you need.

OK thanks for the reply !

I try to use as little primer, color coats, and clear coats as I can to avoid "paint buildup" which will hide some of the details. There's no reason for five coats of primer, 12 color coats, and 16 clear coats.

I wouldn't waste it on an engine assembly. I use Tamiya primer for bodies and nothing else.

Are you saying don't prime at all  ??

Or don't use the Tamiya primer   ??

I'm planning on painting the engine assembly with Tamiya Color for Plastics spray paint.

Tamiya Fine is great at covering fine detail without covering the detail up. Tamiya Fine is also expensive. For a part without fine detail, or where an impeccable finish is not crucial, a less expensive primer may get the work done.

Harry Joy answered for me. Use primer but don't waste the Tamiya stuff. I use the Color Place gray primer from Walmart for everything except bodies: it's cheap and it works well.

OK thanks all !

For parts where you do use the Tamiya fine spray primer, how long do you need to let it dry before spraying the color coat over it  ?
