Mr Stock Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hi all Does anybody know a source in resin for the half moon dogdish hubcaps as used on the 59 Chevys like the Biscayne, Bel Airs etc. I think they come in the AMT 59 El camino kit but they aren't easy to pick up over here too thankyou in advance
Ron Hamilton Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I used the Modelhaus '59 Chevy dog dish caps on my '58, even though they are not correct for that car they will work on a model in the picture.
Mr Stock Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Thanks Ron, looks like another part to add to the neverending MODELHAUS list lol !
Toner283 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Just as a note: the dog dish caps are not in the 59 Elcamino kit. The AMT 59 elky kit has the full wheelcovers in it.
Mike Chernecki Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Can anyone confirm if these are the same as used on the '62 Fuelie Corvette? They sure look the same.
Toner283 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Same caps on the real deal. Corvette guys pay big $$$$ for caps that aren't all beat up.
modelcarpassionguy Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Hey Chris,West Coast Diecast used to make several 1/24 scale model cars and one of them was the '59 El Camino which came with the factory hubcaps. If you go to Vicki's Gifts on line, you might have some luck buying a set of four. They're very accurate and should fit. They also sell parts for the '59,'61,'62 and '64 Impalas they produced like a variety of interior components in various colors, tires, rims, aerials, mirrors etc., on ebay.Good Luck!
ChrisBcritter Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I think they come in the AMT 59 El camino kitThey never have been in the El Camino; there may have been some confusion on that because the Street Rods issue of the kit showed them on the box art and the original kit's box art was not very clear. The dog dish caps were only on the original annual and Craftsman reissue 1959 Impala, but were made to appear like a full wheel cover (you'd have to cut away the outer part to make them look and fit correct on a painted steel wheel).

peekay Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Modelhaus has '59 Chevy dog-dish hubcaps in plated resin. Art I used those on this model but overdid it with the black detailing. With more care they could be made to look accurate.

Peter thats the photo I was looking for!, it was your model that made me think they came in the 59 El Camino kit, love this model mate its beautiful.

Peekay, I don't think you overdid it on the black detailing on the caps at all. It looks just right to me. Here are a couple of pictures of a friend of mine's perfectly restored 59 El Camino. This is the nicest one I have ever seen. I own a full size 59 Camino so I have looked at a lot of them. Edited November 19, 2015 by Toner283
mike 51 Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 (edited) Dogdish (hubcaps)? You guys know that those are just called hubcaps vs. wheelcovers... right? Edited November 19, 2015 by mike 51

If you go that route, I can hook you up with lots of good reference photos of the black car above. The owner made the car available to me for a couple of hours to photograph for reference when putting mine back together. I probably have 500 pictures of that car. Mine is some assembly required lol. peekay Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Gary, Chris, thanks for the compliments. I've always been a big fan of the 59 (and 60) El Caminos and the AMT kit is one of their best, the not-so-pretty joint in the pickup bed sides being the only real flaw. I still think less would have been more with my black detailing though. Chris, your project obviously has a way to go yet but the beautiful black car as something to aim for should keep your enthusiasm up. I recently saw a photo of a Biscayne with this look, black with dog-dish caps - for me just as nice as a two-tone Impala. Here's a shot of the other side of my model. I messed up the paint on the driver's door so I used this decal to save the day. While I was at it I deleted the whitewalls and liked the effect together with the caps.

Nice! There is a wrecker not far from me that had/has a few '59 & '60 El Caminos stashed away in a barn on the property and a few convertibles as well. If I already didn't have too many projects, I would love to have an El Camino.
Mike Chernecki Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 Does anyone know of these dog dish hubcaps are available anywhere since this post was originally posted a few years back?
