HotRodaSaurus Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 I have seen this a lot latley but what does it mean? Is it a derogatory name for a real car or a model or a kind of model? Or is it just a type of model? Heeeeeeeeeelp, I dont want to be missing out on anything here.
Harry P. Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Donks are real cars jacked up on 26" or bigger wheels. If you are over 13 you wouldn't understand. Check out the DONK THREAD, lots of pictures there. Just don't eat anything before you go there...
Daniel Peterson Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 (edited) In a nut shell...Picture a 1:32 car running on 1:18 scale custom wheels. The "donk" name originated from Impalas first exhibiting this customizing style, which is similar to new school low-rider customizing touches on a late model body lifted skyward by grossly oversized wheels. Street speak references to the Impala badge as a "donkey" later evolved to "donk". (kind of like slang on top of slang) It later came to refer to any body style finished in a similar manner. I read about the origin of the donk name somewhere and it makes enough sense to me that I have adopted it as "the scoop". As with some other customizing styles, I really don't care much for it personally, but the ones that are well done are to be admired for their outstanding paintwork and engineering. I just dislike the art, not the artist. Edited March 24, 2008 by Daniel Peterson
roadhawg Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 I'm guessing "Donk" is the sound your butt makes hitting the ground after you got out of one while forgetting you're 10 feet in the air?

Aaronw Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 That' what I read too. Southern slang; Refers to the "Donkey" badge on the Impala, and originally exclusive to an Impala only. That's kind of funny considering an Impala is a very nimble animal like a Gazelle and looks nothing like a donkey. Guess I need to have a look at an Impala badge to see if the artwork is really that bad or peoples imagination taking a huge leap of artistic license. Of course if this developed in the inner cities it is very likely the people who came up with the name have never seen a real impala or donkey.
Darrell Gwinn Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 (edited) Hmm i never heard of the donkey thing before. Have you ever heard heard the term badonkadonk? well its slang for big ole butt..lol and since donks are the big cars from the 70s, look at the back of these cars. the trunk area is huge! then the 80s style cars are boxes, cause they have so many flat panels (like my monte in my avatar), and the newer cars are bubbles since they are more round. i dont like them really but hey im not gonna tell anyone what they should build Edited March 23, 2008 by Dirk

Darrell Gwinn Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 i still dont see what the whole drug runner has to do with it. so what if some drive em? im sure there are some that drive old crappy beater cars too! people drive what they like.

Daniel Peterson Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 which is ovious cause you dont know ###### about them Take a breath and please re-read my post. I acknowledged that I don't like them but I admire the workmanship. I also cited that I'd read the origin of the name elsewhere. And my reference, though exaggerated, to the wheels being out of scale to the car is not all that inaccurate, now is it? Instead of jumping up and down and throwing a rammy, please give us your explanation of what a donk is and the origin of the name. I don't presume to know it all, and I sure DON'T know ###### about them. Maybe that's where you can step in and help me understand it a bit better. I obviously rubbed your fur the wrong way with my post, and apologize.

marinewifejones Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I have been to MANY car shows and was into tuners when I was younger (amazing i still have my hearing) and until Clay found this board I had never heard the term DONK (and I am from a southern state, Florida and have so far lived in South Carolina and California). As with lots of slang I am sure that there is no one true origine of the name. Couldnt tell ya where it came from since I only recently heard the term nor do I really care because thats just not my style car but everyone is entitled to their own opinion on all style of cars, that is why there are soo many.
marinewifejones Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 (edited) Lownslow, Thank you for apolgizing to Daniel and evilone. Just keep in mind that this is a friendly forum and unlike speaking you can erase what you say before you hit send so think about your words carefully. I am sure no one here ment to offend you in any way. It also would have been helpfull if you had given us your version of what the term Donk means to start with instead of telling everyone else they are wrong. I totatly understand having a temper and blowing up (I have a nasty one) but if this were on my board (i help run a military support site) it would not have been tolerated, everyone is here for support, encouragement, help and ideas. I hope you have a wonderful evening and dont let any of this ruin it for ya. Edited March 24, 2008 by marinewifejones
Nick F40 Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 It's mainly in the East, that's how we represent! Same as the lowriders in the west, but I like lowriders ALOT more. I'm into tuners to, the REAL tuners though, not the 5,000 pounds of useless stereo equipment, useless exhaust from Pep Boys, cars covered in graphics, etc. ones.

I kinda outgrew them though and have settled town and drive a soccer mom mini van (but hey its orange so i should get some credit there)
