Hi --  I've started building models again after a 23-year "break"  ;-)

In the past, for aluminum parts I always used Krylon #1403 "dull aluminum" for any aluminum engine parts, etc.

However, I can't seem to find that same can anymore.

What is the "go to" aluminum paint that you guys like ?

Thanks

My favorite is "metallizer polishing aluminum plate" . No real effort needed to make it look great! When I run out of my current supply, I'll have to try something else.

But -- as the name of it says "buffing" -- do you need to actually buff it out after spraying?   That can be a real trick on small parts.

Thanks

Awesome.  Thanks !

The stuff dries fast and always gives a consistent finish.

Tamiya Silver Leaf looks pretty cool when sprayed and NOT cleared.

WHY does clearing Silver Leaf kill it so bad?????

I built a Monogram Fast Buck and painted it silver leaf over the molded blue.....looked FANTASTIC!!!!

Then I cleared it. Still OK....but just a common silver I could have gotten with Testors.....

Pick up some ceramic brake caliper paint. I use this paint on brand new intake manifolds and water pumps. It look s EXACTLY like the raw cast aluminum but doesn't take stains at all. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

Hey Curt,

I can't see it in the picture, - is it still called Dull Aluminum?  I haven't been able to find it around here,

It has been my go to for years and also works as a good base under the Testors metallizers

Thanks, Steve

Sounds like I need to check out the other suggestions as well.

http://www.krylon.com/products/metallic-paint/

still called Dull Aluminum and same number 1403.

I am having a hard time finding Krylon Semi-Gloss Black in Canada, love that stuff for 1:1 builds, underhood, dash, chassis, etc.

That's the "metalizer" stuff that you need to buff, though -- right ?

Thanks

Some require buffing and some don't.  The bottle or can of paint will let you know if it needs to be buffed.

Where did you find it at ?

I've checked a few stores around me and they have the other metallic colors, but not the aluminum.

Thanks

On chrome plated parts that I want to have an aluminum color, I simply spray a couple light coats of Testors Dull-Cote and it works good. I do this on wheels, bumpers, Moon tanks, blowers, etc. to name a few.

I do the same thing, the results look good to me.  For non-plated parts I've been using Krylon Matte Aluminum as well.

I get it at ACE hardware.

This would depend...... Testors Model Masters offers 2 DIFFERENT "Metalizer" Aluminum color paints. one is buff the other is NON-Buff, I have both!

Now, a question, these still being made/offered still? As said some mentioned they'd have to go to something else, why? Not offered anymore, OR not happy with the metalizer?

-Now for a post of my own.....

I use Dark Aluminum from Alclad, AS WELL as Testors Model Masters Metalizers both buff and non-buff, as well as Matte Aluminum from Krylon and then you have the Dollar Store "Aluminum" I still have and even some of the off-brand Aluminum I've picked up over the years. some in spray cans others in small bottles. Depending on what I'm trying to do, I use which ever looks that way (I keep paint notes on what looks like what in real life to make the item look as its real.

So, I have an array of "Aluminum" shade paints..... Just a not, DO NOT try to paint (spray) other colors over top of ANYTHING with the "Krylon" name on it, it will react to this paint, as its a tempermental paint to work with and does not get along well with others!

No, the Aluminum Plate is non buffing, the Polished Aluminum is the buffing one.
