junkyardjeff Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Was this motor ever in any kit,I would like to stick one in the Kenworth I am rebuilding.
landman Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 It was in one of the racing trucks.Bandag Bandit?
redneckrigger Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 They are quite easy to make using two V8 Detroit engines. Have done it many times. AND, if you build a few, you get left over parts that can be used to make a 6V71 engine! Bonus!!!
junkyardjeff Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 I found the remains of the Peterbuilt I built back in 74 and it has a V8 Detroit so I need to find another motor, the motor I have is not complete but another complete motor and I am there.
junkyardjeff Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 The chassis is too narrow for the V8 so I will use it for another project.
vincen47 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 For anyone else who is interested in a v12, Moluminum has one on the website now.
Old Albion Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Jeff,Your comment about the KW chassis being to narrow for the 8V Detroit is an interesting one. I'm sure that's why on the 1:1 Kenworth trucks the exhaust manifolds on 12V71s are turned upwards, because the frame is to narrow for the manifolds to point downwards.
10thumbs Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Dave, that's a real interesting point. I'll bet it applies as well.I recently scratch built a small drag race car, only the body was bought. A resin piece. I did the frame rails and all the rest according to known dimensions for some areas, the rest from pics. Amazing thing was, the motor had to sit exactly where the body prescribed, or the rest of the build would just not jive. Even the fuel tank mounted in front of the motor had to be built exactly like shown on various real cars, or else it wouldn't work. Other things as well.I have the feeling our models and aftermarket parts are fairly exact.
junkyardjeff Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 I will remove the manifolds and see how it fits, that is what was hitting the frame.
10thumbs Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Jeff, I'll bet too there's room for even raising the motor at the mounts somewhat to help compensate. Just thinking out loud.
Force Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 (edited) Both the Tyrone Malone Super Boss and Bandag Bandit KW W900 race trucks has 12V-71 engines, they are not exactly the same as the twin turbo arrangement is different on them, they are the only ones I know of, but on the aftermarket there are some available, except for the ones already mentioned I know P & P Resinworks has one because I have bought them from him twice, Melbourne Model Truck Accessories had a couple V12's but I don't think they are in business anymore. Old Albion Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I think the engine in the Super Boss KW is a marine version and a 12V71TTA (Twin Turbocharged and After-cooled). I bought some old Hendrix resin cast ones a few years ago and put one in an Autocar and still have 2 left for possible future projects. On an 8V71 the exhaust manifolds should be above the frame rails and point towards the rear of the truck. With a 12V71 as stated the manifolds turn upwards with the outlet at the rear of the engine. There is a special "U" shaped pipe that bolts to the manifold and converts the exhaust to point downwards. Hope this makes sense.
lapazleo Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Actually the upturned manifold and u shape was to clear the steering shaft. If you notice the 8v71 and 12v71 are the same width. 12v71 manifolds exit to the rear like the 8v71 normally. It depended on the truck they were in.
Force Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 (edited) I think the engine in the Super Boss KW is a marine version and a 12V71TTA (Twin Turbocharged and After-cooled). Well that's probably true, but the engines were most likely tweaked and modified some as the one in Super Boss produced around 1000 hp and the one in the Bandag Bandit around 1300 hp. He must have liked Detroit Diesels as the Boss Truck Of America also had a 12V-71, The Papa Truck and Hideout Truck had 8V-92T's and the Hurricane had a 6V-92T Tri-Turbo Edited December 31, 2015 by Force
