om617
Hi. Has anyone any experience with Smooth Cast 300? Looks pretty easy to use from they`re youtube video. My question would be what would be ideal to use for mold? Got my hands on some uptops and thought i give it a shot on cast some examples. If a success,i might try cast 61-64 GM full size station wagon roofs.
crazyjim
I've been using Smooth-On for a few years, Tommy. Smooth Cast 300 along with their OoMoo 30 for the molds. Both products mix a 50/50 ratio so it's easy to measure.

crazyjim
I use baby powder as a release agent if needed. Bear in mind that I do only 1 part molds. You would need a better release agent if you're doing 2 part molds.
om617
Okay thanks. Looks like i will have to make 2 part molds for these items. Here is another product that looks interesting and easy to work with.
Kit Basher
If your molds are made of RTV silicone rubber, you may not need mold release when casting. I've cast a bunch of small parts, and they come out of the mold easily without mold release. I've never done a body, mold release might be necessary for those. It's very important to use mold release when you pour the second part of a two part mold, as RTV sticks to itself really well. I've used both Smooth On and Alumilite mold release. Both work fine. Smooth-Cast 300 is easy to use and works well.

When it comes time to drop in resin, I remove surface tension by a slight sprinkle of baby/talc powder.Seems like any petro based fromage would work to prevent RTV to RTV stickage no?
