Zoom Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I´m building this Pocher Mercedes in “Big boys” but I think my question is general so I put it here. This was not easy, I have put on three layers off Tamiya fine white primer and wet sanded between. Now when I put on the first layer of Tamiya “pure white” I see that the red I slightly visible. It´s not pure white, it has a kind of darker white, not as white as the fenders. The fenders and all other parts are in white plastic, so they get fine in white paint. Can I sand the paint and put on more layers of the primer?? Any idea how to solve this problem is welcome.
Snake45 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I'd strip the body to bare plastic and re-prime in silver, then a light gray primer, then white primer, then your white color coat. That regimen should kill any red light coming through the paint.
astroracer Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) It looks like the kit is molded in red, right? Covering red/burgundy plastic is tough. Like Richard said you need to get the "red" buried under multi coats of primer. I use strictly automotive based primers for this. Dupont grey sandable would be my choice. I would even suggest using a sealer over the primer once you have it ready for paint. This will help keep the red from bleeding through.Mark Edited January 25, 2016 by astroracer
High octane Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 For colored plastic bodies I paint them with silver, then my primer, and then the color coats and clears. This seems to work just fine for me as I have done this with red and green colored plastic bodies over the past couple of years.
Zoom Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 Thank you all.I live and learn, and it´s always fun to get tips, how to solve things, here from the forum.
gtx6970 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I had heard paintng them silver then primer and paint works nice.I had also heard to use a primer / sealer then primer and paint works as well Time will tell. I want to do a couple Revell thunderbolts in white using the Gas Ronda car thats molded in orange ( got a bunch of them on hand )
Harry Joy Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I'm close to finishing a kit that was molded in bright red. I primered the outside as well as the inside in Tamiya Fine Gray Primer, and there isn't a hint of red anywhere. Except - the interior tub. I primered it in Tamiya Fine White, and it shone through no matter what. Until I went back and laid down some Fine Gray.I think that laying down the gray primer inside and out kept the red down.
