CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 So beginning the first non box stock build with a 32 ford coupe rat rod. Have a reference pic of what id like it to roughly resemble but have not done any customizing work what so ever with modeling before. I am very green( this being my third build). Was looking for help and ideas on what to modify and how to set things up. I know i want to do a chop top and think i can do that with my skills. My main thing i need help with is lowering the car. I want it to basically lay frame on the ground. Also looking for design ideas to make it look "ratted" i tried looking for rat rod builds but couldnt see to find any using the search bar. Anyways any help would be appreciated and i will update the build as i go. Wish me luck
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) Here's a tutorial I did eons ago on zeeing that Revell frame. A zeed frame is absolutely necessary in the rear to get a car that low. Another way to get those Revell frames low is to build custom up-and-over rails in the rear, and to modify the front for a "suicide" spring perch. The stock Revell frame is in the foreground, the modified and much lower one in the background. This lets you get the car very low. I've left this one with sufficient ground clearance to be street-drivable, but that same frame will go lower, as low as your reference photo. Edited February 27, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 The zeeing looks easy enough i will give it a shot. Very good tutorial btw. I plan to start on this in the morning. Will post updates as i go. But again thank you. I fogured i would have to build a frame from scratch which is way above my skill level right now.
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 Also this will be my first model using an airbrush. If anyone can give me tips or ideas on how to paint the body of the car and frame. I want a mix between the reference car above and this one below. I have never used an airbrush before so go easy on me. Thanks again guys
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Glad to help. I didn't mean to glom all over your build thread. I'll be happy to pull those photos down if you want.
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) If you want to do rust, google "Dr. Cranky rust video". Here's one on the "salt" method a lot of guys use. Edited February 27, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 Nope its fine with me. Like i said it is a build thread but more of a help me out i dont know what im doing thread lol. Im new to this forum so might not be the right spot for this thread but i will post as i build and see how it comes out. Going to try to do a decent amount of custom work on this. Scraping the ford motor and putting a chevy 383 stroker im building in it with custom stacked headers. But any help or ideas are encouraged and appreciated
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 If you want to do rust, google "Dr. Cranky rust video". That's a good place to start, and he gets in to several techniques.that is who ive been watching alot. Learning alot of cool things from him. Just seeing other ways people do patina style paint jobs and detailing
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 You're in the right place...and welcome to the forum. We're ALL still learning, so everything you go through will be of benefit to many people here.
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 PS. Here's a search tip that may help you get more relevant results, too. There's a LOT of rats and patina on the forum.
crazyrichard Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 nice project ! yes z-ing the frame is must to go that low , also channeling the body over the frame ....and a lot of dryfitting and getting suspension set right ....the kit you have chosen is a great base ....i build the exact kit twise and to chop this one .. pretty easy you dont even have to split the roof .. i managed to cut the pillars then get the door and window lines mtched again and filled up the front of the roof above the front window with some styrene , or yo can make it into a visor ..some bodys are harder to chop you have a good body to chop !
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 Thats encouraging. Going to start the process of zeeing and chopping this morning. Wish me luck lol
GTJUNIOR Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Good luck with your project. I'll be checking in on this.
squirrel886 Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Very nice! Looking forward to the rest of the build. Bill, aka Ace, has the easiest way to Z a frame. I did it the hard way.
CelticModeler Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) So finally got around to working on this build. Im doing two at the same time. But anyway. Zeeing and chopping the top sounded alot easier than what it turned out to be and yes i can see this is going to be alot of dry fitting on this one. First car i have built requiring mods like this so deff a learning curve. Also tried to get the chop lines to smooth out with putty but wasnt working to well. Glad im going for a rat on this one and not a polished show car haha. Edited March 2, 2016 by CelticModeler .
CelticModeler Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Worked some more tonight. Got most of the motor done. Trying different little things like "orange gasket" on the oil pan. Also painted the wheels and tried to get an idea of where it will sit at ride height. Think i need to dechrome the rest of the motor parts. Might keep the carb chrome tho. And yes i know the window gaps dont line up great on the front. Going to have to work with it some more.
crazyrichard Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 yes you see the lines match , but not on the front , what you can do is ad a piece on top at the front , maybe a visor will help also .. i like the rake of the roof
CelticModeler Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 I havent figured out what exactly im going to do to fix it yet. It is exactly the chop and rake i wanted but now i have to deal with that haha.the other side isnt as bad as this side tho. Not bad for my first chop tho i think. Will work on it some more tonight and post an update. So far its been tougher than i expected but still fun
