tonye66 Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Hi all. This will mark my first documented build ever on this site. Been a member for years and I've received a ton of inspiration. I picked up this MCRC wrecker body a couple weeks back at a show and had a crazy idea to build a dodge wrecker. I've had this LRE for a few years and had no inspiration to build it until now. A great member on this site helped me out with a chassis, huge thanks to Dan (59 Impala). Picked up a set of wheels and tires from scenes unlimited. If you haven't yet, order some. Nicest dually set I've ever seen. I figured this is the perfect build to use my Gofer Racing decals on. Stay tuned...
gatorincebu Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Glad to see you are taking the plunge into documenting your build. That in itself can be fun. As for this project. I like it. Be Well Gator
59 Impala Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Glad to see ya gettin started on it Tony. Also, I'm glad to be able to help ya out. Lookin forward to seeing this one built. Dan
mikemodeler Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I'll be watching this one and anxious to see it done. That wrecker bed looks like a copy of the one in the Midnite Cowboy kit, which is a nice replica of the Holmes.
tonye66 Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Just a quick mockup. Still hunting for my spare 440 engine. I haven't quite decided on a color scheme yet. Hate to be so boring and go with just white.
tonye66 Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 So I put this together. It's a 69 GTX 440 and the Trans from the kit. I think it'll do just fine. Not terribly accurate, but it certainly looks better than the blob that comes in the LRE kit. It'll spruce up with a MAD distributor and a nice coat of Chrysler blue
DumpyDan Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 cool looks like this is going to be a good looking build
Badluck 13 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 "....And now for something completely different"....Nice project you don't see being done hardly,a Dodge tow truck!!! I will be following along on this one, mock up looks great and I have to second that on Scenes Unlimited , I purchased the Meng Super Duty dually conversion that came with panels, wheels, and tires and are as you said nicest quality...
leafsprings Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Great idea, a wrecker build will be a stand out in any collection. It looks like your starting out with the most accurate parts too. The 1 ton wheels and wrecker body look very realistic. Is the wrecker body still available from MCRC? I can't seem to find it offered. Or is this another great item that came and went and no longer readily available.
tonye66 Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 I just picked the body up a few weeks back. It may be a new offering not yet on the site. Progress has been slow. It's been busy at work and I've been fighting issues with my daily driver. Will post up some pics tonight.
tonye66 Posted March 27, 2016 Author Posted March 27, 2016 Finally got some bench time in this morning. I worked on the interior a bit. I didn't like the bucket/jump seat combo molded in so I chopped it out. Used some sheet styrene to rebuild the back of the interior and cut up 2 rear seats from old monogram Blazers to make a nice looking bench. Added some brake and clutch pedals from a blazer kit too. It's roughed in at this point. Plenty of sanding to do. Now on to the bed....
Superpeterbilt Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Nice work, and cool project. I didnt know this Holmes wrecker body is available in resin. Are they still being cast, or is this an old casting?
tonye66 Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) I got it at a show a couple weeks back. Motor City Resin produced it, although it's not on their site. Edited March 29, 2016 by tonye66
