Sixties Sam Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 (edited) I found photos of a customized Corvair that I liked and decided to make something like it, but keeping the rear engine. The real one has a front-mounted V8. I got a Corvair kit from eBay and modified the body by enlarging the wheel openings and making fender flares from styrene sheet. I painted it orange, but the spray can nozzle kept clogging up and the paint came out looking more like orange snot than paint! After a day in the purple pond, it's ready to try again with different orange paint. I lowered the suspension a little and replaced those 13" wheels with some larger ones from my parts boxes, and added a nose from an old Corvair kit. Comments and ideas are welcome! Here's my inspiration. Body before painting. Edited May 6, 2016 by Sixties Sam
espo Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 This looks like a really great build. A real shame about the first paint job. You mentioned that you changed the front end and in one picture you can see just the edge of the front, so what have you done there ?

I used this custom nose piece I had from an old Corvair kit from the 1960's.
espo Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I used this custom nose piece I had from an old Corvair kit from the 1960's. How and where are you going to put the radiator ? or are you going to stay with the stock engine ?
Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 That should be one nice Corvair when your done. I'm curious as to what engine you'll be using as well. Here's a guy that built a mid engine Corvair: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011/02/14/hemmings-find-of-the-day-mid-engine-corvair/
slusher Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I used this custom nose piece I had from an old Corvair kit from the 1960's. I really like the nose piece your using. Have you decided on tail lights?
Sixties Sam Posted May 1, 2016 Author Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) David and Jay, I'm using the stock Corvair engine with 4 carbs in its stock position (not mid-engine). I added plug wires. Carl, - stock taillights, too, but I might paint the rear panel where the lights and license plate are black or silver. Paint update: I just sprayed on a coat of Krylon pumpkin orange. Looks good so far, although it's a lighter shade than I used before. Thanks for your interest guys!Sam Edited May 1, 2016 by Sixties Sam
Sixties Sam Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 (edited) I finished the Corvair today. Not the best job, but after that paint debacle, I just wanted to git 'er done! Comments, good or bad, welcome! Sam Edited May 6, 2016 by Sixties Sam
cobraman Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 For me the front is questionable but that is just me. Overall I like the car very much.

slusher Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Sam, i really like your Corvair. I like the nose very cool. Edited May 7, 2016 by slusher
mod3l Lover Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I think that nose piece looks like it belongson a different car all together. (To me that is!) But the build over-all is very cool, I have beena fan of Corvairs for like, . . forever. David S.
