Just got back to the build this week, as the guys in the shop had to get the DM600 ready for the upcoming construction season, and the old timer got shoved to the back burner, yet again. I will have some more photos soon. Got the winch built up, decided to use a hydraulic drive as I can't find something satisfactory to use for the chain drive to look right. So, a hydraulic pump, and a Tulsa hydraulic winch from Moluminum will do the job. Got the piping and wiring done from the cab back, a firewall fitted, the steering fitted up, a tapered tail and roller for the trailer, the interior built up, window channels done as suggested previously by 41chevy, and a bunch more little things done. Pretty much decided on a red cab with black fenders and chassis, but I DID just see a beautiful photo of a bright chrome yellow B81 with red chassis.......................hhmmmmmmm!

Now you're clickin'!  It's good to see some Imagineering at work!  I was checking out your hood and hinges.  Can I make a suggestion???  Either you are going to have to sand down the edge of the hood at the cowl OR you are going to have to take a wedge out of each side at the hinges to bring the hood in a bit.  It looks to me like there is a bit of overhang at the cowl.  Is there some overhang or is it just the way I'm looking at it?

Using the V8 from the DM-800

Tom:  Just a quick suggestion for the winch cable.  Michaels craft store has some great mylar coated silver stranded bead wire that looks just like winch cable.  I used some on my breaker model.  I think they might have a larger size for use on your rig.

Hey Charles, any chance you happen to know the diameter(s) of the beading wire, or perhaps a rough estimate? I can think of all sorts of uses for a scale representation of steel cable. Is it really limited to one, maybe two sizes? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's interest was piqued by your suggestion so it would be awesome if you had additional info for us! Thanks!

I answered my own question by searching the Michaels site. A veritable treasure trove of beading wire. I did a quick scan of 2 of the 9 pages of beading wire and saw diameters ranging from 0.012" to 0.095". Colors were silver, gold, aluminum, etc. Some were 7 strands, some 16 strands. I did notice quite a few that were online only and not available in stores. Hope this info helps anyone interested in finding accurate looking steel cable. Thanks again Charles for making this suggestion!

Tom, anytime you put a winch on a truck, makes it a Mean Machine. Have you figured out what type of trailer will go with this?

Glad to help out, Mike.  Hope you find good size for the winch.  The wire I used was 0.015".  I'd recommend going with a slightly larger diameter, say 0.018" which is 0.46mm diameter.

Awesome Charles, I will check them out. I hadn't gotten that far yet but it sure was going to be a thing that I had no idea where to look. THANK YOU!!!

And, no, I will pass on the fries 'cause I'm on a diet, but I WILL have a shake...........if that were a real truck, it would be a ground shaker!

I'm figuring on a beavertail version of the AMT lowboy, with a backdating to make it look more period. But THAT is a project for another day!
