I've been looking for a model of the 1955 Chevrolet, saw this one on Amazon.ca, for CDN$ 262.26. Was also on Amazon.com for US $110.50. Are these people CRAZY, or is the model that hard to find??

These kits can still be found for much more realistic prices than THAT. Somewhere in the 30 - 40 $ range depending on condition. Some may find them even cheaper.

The "street machine" version is rarer than the stocker, but keep in mind that most or all of the "street machine" parts (such as the beam front axle) are also in the '55 Nomad, which is a very common kit. You might be able to buy a stocker AND a Nomad for what some are asking for the so-called street machine version.

Even that "de contented" AMT 55, I think its the millenium edition, Is a straight re-pop of the street machine w/o all the go fast goodies. Most of the time I toss the kit tires, motor/tranny and parts bash it anyway, so that particular kit is still a good buy IMO . It can still be found for around $25 to $30 or so. :D

That looks like one of the original WalMart checkerboard kits, which sold for $4.99.  The Monogram '55 BelAir Hardtop is actually a 1/25 scale, however the '55 Street Machine with the tube axle is 1/24

It is. They were also in the 4-packs assortments for around 14.99 for 4 kits. Pretty sure there were a few assorted parts in there that wern't in the other issues, I'll go check later.

The Monogram kit is a different beast altogether. 1/24th scale and a hardtop Bel Air.

IT WAS A BAD KIT 30 YEARS AGO & NEVER GOT BETTER IMO

So, I just looked through one of my copies of the kit. Mine have slightly different artwork on the box top but pics of the same built model.

Mine does not have the chrome strait axle or the fuel injection parts.  Seems some issues of the kit do though as there's pics of the parts on the side of the box.

What is in mine that is not in the Nomad is a nice chromed Weiand intake and air cleaner and a new 4bbl carb. Also some seprate door arm rests and a cluch-brake pedal part and an '80s style aftermarket steering wheel for the interior.

The new chrome engine stuff look a lot like the intake parts in the AMT '34 Ford hot rod.

Wasn't all that stuff in the regular "stock" '55 kit? Runs in my mind it was.

Both versions of the '55 sedan should include the "street machine" parts (Weiand intake, unplated Centerline wheels, snorkel scoop).  The stock issues will have the stock version parts as the alternate version.  The "street machine" issues will have the gasser parts from the Nomad kit (injection setup, American Mag wheels, gasser front axle).  The gasser front axle parts in the sedan kits aren't plated like they are in the Nomad.  The rear axle isn't plated in the sedans either.

OK, This is the version I have. Clearly marked as the "street machine" version but it looks like it has exactly the same contents as the regular version. I opened up a fresh one to make sure I hadn't pirated the parts out of the first box but it has the exact same contents as the first. The only gasser parts in it were the front cross member for the strait axle. No axle or fuel injection parts in these versions.

Never knew that before so if you want the gasser parts don't get this one. :o

I have this version that I bought at Walmart but it wasn't checker board but it was like 7.99. No gasser parts and the wheels pictured is not chrome. I have mine painted but not built. They still pop up on ebay...

For a '56 your choices are the Revell '56 Del Ray, Revell '56 Nomad, and the Monogram '56 Chevy Bel Air hardtop.

I've not heard a single bad thing about the Revell kits. The Monogram is simple, 1/24 and goes together VERY well. I think any of these would be a good choice depending on what type of model you want to build.
