To all,

Hope all are well. I am hoping that some out there can help me. Looking for the proper engine shades for the following cars:

1969 Camaro SS

1970 Boss 429

1969 Super Bee 440 Six Pack

1971 Hemi Cuda

1971 340 Duster

I do realize that the instruction sheets will have paint colors listed but I think they're generally more generic. So curious on what some others would have used. Also for Chrysler Corp Hemi Orange would Tamiya TS-31 be suitable to use as the color choice? Or should I select Model Master Hemi Orange? In looking at them online they appear very close. Thanks for looking.

The '69 Camaro SS is Chevrolet Engine Red, a brilliant red-orange accurately made by Testor/Model Master. This is true whether small block (350) or big block (396).

1969 Camaro SS - Chevy Engine Orange as Snake said

Chevrolet had red and yellow V8 engines 1956-57 but most of them after that are more to the orange shade.

1970 Boss 429 - Ford Engine Blue

Ford had black engines with different colored valve covers and air cleaners depending on engine version between 1959 and 1965 and blue after that up to 1974, they used two different blue colors, a darker one between 1966 and 68 and a lighter shade 1969 to 74

1969 Super Bee 440 Six Pack - Street Hemi Orange

1971 Hemi Cuda - Street Hemi Orange

1971 340 Duster - Street Hemi Orange

Allmost all Mopar High Performance engines were Street Hemi Orange wich are a reddish orange color, except for the 1964-65 426 Race Hemi's and 413-426 Max Wedge engines, they were Race Hemi Orange wich is a bright orange color with more yellow in it.
Many 383-440 non high performance were turquoise, and the 440 Magnum in 1968 Chargers, the Hemi in 1968 and 1969 Chargers were Street Hemi Orange.

Here is a guide for you to point you in the right direction...Mopar Race Hemi Orange is not present.

RE : Engine Colours for Chrysler Engines :

- 1969 1/2 440 Six Pack : In spite of its factory-installed Edelbrock intake , all of the engine was orange .

- Exhaust manifolds were oversprayed with engine paint , as they were installed before the engine was painted (although , most of the paint burned-off within a month of regular use) . This applies to all Chrysler engines , from the 170 Slant Six to the 426 Street Hemi .

- Bellhousings ( manual trans ) were engine colour .

- 440+6 ( as well as all Ramcharger / Air Grabber equipped engines , and 1972-1974 high performance engines' )  air cleaners were painted a different shade of orange (closer to Race Hemi Orange) .

Thanks. I appreciate the information. As far as the Hemi Orange vs. Tamiya TS-31 Bright Orange I was referring to the exterior body of the car. Sorry my bad.

Thanks all very informative. However I must clarify the last part where I wrote "Also for Chrysler Corp Hemi Orange would Tamiya TS-31 be suitable to use as the color choice? Or should I select Model Master Hemi Orange? In looking at them online they appear very close." I was referring to the body of the Super Bee not the engine block. Sorry my bad. So if anyone could clarify I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

PS, the 440 magnum in 1968 B body cars was turquoise NOT street hemi orange  ( same goes for the 383 HP engines in 1968)

Not to mention the 1969 340 being turquoise ; 1968 340 was red .

That's what I meant when I wrote "Many 383-440 non high performance were turquoise, and the 440 Magnum in 1968 Chargers"
But I maybe should have wrote 1968 B-bodys instead of just Chargers.

It's worth noting that this only applies to Passenger car V8s. Truck engines and 6 cylinder Chevrolets prior to '66 were not necessarily orange. http://1954advance-design.com/Web images/PPIP/PPIP-1912-1966-EngineColors.html

Yes it's only passenger cars and V8's...I haven't had any pickup truck engine information...but I do now ;)
