aurfalien Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Hello Esteemed Builders!First is first, Happy 4th of July! A historic day in our wonderful country's rich history. At any rate, I've read a few posts about spraying final paint over Pledge Floor Care to achieve a brilliant finish. One should wait a week for the Pledge to fully cure before doing so apparently. While I have no immediate application or need for this, I was curious as to your thoughts. Harry P. Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Pledge Floor Care (sold previously as "Future") is nothing more than clear acrylic. Some people, like Bill Geary, for one, use it as a barrier between the kit's bare plastic and the color coats, to prevent any bleed-thru. It certainly can't hurt. And since Pledge Floor Care is simply clear acrylic, you don't need to wait a week for it to dry. It'll dry a lot quicker than that. I actually use it as my final clear coat on top of the paint. I brush it on. Works great (for me, at least!). All of these models feature a Future clear coat...

MrObsessive Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Yes, I stand by Future as my go to item when I need to prevent something from crazing or bleed through. BIN Zinsser Sealer is another good one, and it's what I actually prefer to use as it's easier to apply with an airbrush than the Future-----especially for bodywork. Another thing I found out about Future.......for some reason super glue doesn't play nice with Alclad paint----at least the times I've used it. I use super glue sometimes to fill in sink marks and whatnot on exhausts and such, and when Alclad is airbrushed over it, it tends to show through. Brushing a coat or two of Future stops that in its tracks so I recommend it for that also. Edited July 4, 2016 by MrObsessive 1 1

BigTallDad Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Harry, those are some great builds! How about showing one on a nice wooden base (hint hint)?
High octane Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 More models using Future as the clear coat... Really nice builds you have there Harry.
Harry P. Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Harry, those are some great builds! How about showing one on a nice wooden base (hint hint)? The bases are for the big guys (1/8 scale)...
Harry P. Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Harry, those are some great builds! How about showing one on a nice wooden base (hint hint)? Ray... not sure if this is the one you made for me, but in any case... Pocher on a base! And yes, Future clearcoat...
Snake45 Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I've airbrushed Dullcote lacquer over Future used as a decal glosscoat on model airplanes too many times to count. No problems, though other airplane modelers have reported Future cracking years later. I haven't seen it.I consider Future to be an inferior product for a final finish for a model car, though, and would never use it that way.

StevenGuthmiller Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Really? Even after seeing my results? What do you base your opinion on?"Opinion" is the key word Harry. Everyone is allowed to have their own. Steve
Harry P. Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Yes, of course. But to claim that Future is an "inferior" product and he would never use it that way as a final finish needs an explanation. His opinion had to be based on something. And I just don't see it... so I'm curious as to why he feels that way.
StevenGuthmiller Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Yes, of course. But to claim that Future is an "inferior" product as a final finish needs an explanation. Now you're asking for "facts". Facts have little to do with opinions. Steve
Harry P. Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Funny, but I base my opinions on facts. And the fact is, Future makes a terrific final finish on a model. Therefore my opinion that it works great as a clear coat is based on that fact. The facts led me to my conclusion.Which is why I am interested as to what led Rich to his opinion.

You're a relic Harry. All you have to do is look at our government to see how few people there are left that base their opinions on fact. Steve
Harry P. Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I may be a relic, but I still like to operate based on common sense and facts. And I'm waiting for Rich to explain to me why he thinks Future doesn't work as a clear coat, despite visual evidence to the contrary.I'm not saying he doesn't have a right to his opinion. I'm just asking how he came to his opinion.

Harry P. Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 A few more, all clear coated with "inferior" Future...
Miatatom Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Harry, do you have a tutorial for hand brushing Future?
Harry P. Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Not specifically, no.I use a 3/4" wide, flat, soft sable brush, and brush one area at a time..,. left front fender, right front fender, left rear fender, right rear fender, left side of body, right side of body, etc. By doing it in sections, I have control over runs and sags. Future is very thin, basically the consistency of water. I have tried airbrushing it, but it tends to run and sag no matter how carefully I airbrush it. Doing it one section at a time by brush gives me ultimate control... any runs or sags, I can use the corner of a paper towel to sop up the excess. It's a slow process, and probably not for everyone... but it works for me, as the photos I have posted prove. Brushing it on vs. airbrushing it gives me control over each section. It's probably not a method most guys would go for, but like I said, it works for me, and the photos are the proof.
