Timonator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I'm considering painting a kit that I have white. The problem is that the kit is molded in red. Any suggestions on a primer or basecoat that will work for this ?
Snake45 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Paint it black, or blue, or silver, then put a light gray primer over that. Then your white. There are many answers, but that's a good short one.
mcandela Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Seal it with future(pledge) floor shine, gray duplicolor primer and paint.
peteski Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I would use Tamiya fine white primer (no grays) to maximize the brilliance of the white top coat.
Howard Cohen Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I have used Tamiya Fine White Primer on both red and yellow molded plastic and never had any problems.
High octane Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 This has been gone over many times, and when I have to paint over a colored plastic body I spray Tamiya Leaf Silver on the plastic, followed by Tamiya White Primer, and then my color and clear coats of whatever brand of paint I wish to use. I have not experienced any bleed through using this method and it works for me. I only use gray primer if I'm painting the car silver or black, otherwise I use white primer.
Dave Van Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 My favorite is Duplicolor #1699 sealer or Tamiya silver....both work fine.
Timonator Posted December 12, 2016 Author Posted December 12, 2016 Thanks for all of the advice everyone . I asked beacause I did the amt 70 1/2 motion camaro that was molded in green. I used silver and tamiya white primer as base but the green still bled through the white areas.
