Scott Colmer Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I built this Flameout about 12 years ago when these were pretty hard to come by, so this should count. I bought this one from a private collector. He gave me a deal at under 100.00 dollars. The kit was in good shape. Hosted on Fotki The Scorpion has not been reissued yet. It was also fairly hard to find. E-bay turned one up, but it was a little over the 100.00 mark that was started but in good shape. Hosted on Fotki
Maindrian Pace Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Probably the '69 Ford Cobra, a restoration of a gnarly glue bomb some 25 years ago.
Atmobil Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I did build this 1:20 Revell Snap Ford Econoline "Dallas Cowboys Chearleaders van" some years ago.Not sure how rare it is but it was the harder one to find of the series of different versions of this kit on Ebay. And this Bandai 1:20 VW 1303 is probably not the most common of kits either:
High octane Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 This is my rarest built kit. An MPC '69 Dodge Coronet R/T that I had built in the early 70's for a model car contest. I used AMT Candy Lacquers, thread for spark plug wires, and parts from the JoHan Sox & Martin Pro Stock 'Cuda kit.
talon63 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 This is a stunning example, and the one car I couldn't have enough versions of. My dad owned two 1:1's, one a convertible, the other was a former North Carolina government vehicle with the Interceptor engine. I've been wanting to do a tribute build of them for a long time.
pack rat Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 OK...this is not the sort of subject Steve had in mind when he started this thread......but it IS a car, in kit form, made by AMT, and it's rare with a capital R. A 1968 Camaro Kar-Plak. Probably rare due to the fact that nobody bought them when new, and I doubt anyone is currently looking for one either. Funny thing is; this is technically a more accurate '68 Camaro than the AMT annual. Sorry for the poor pic. Note that the frame isn't the original.
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 Probably the '69 Ford Cobra, a restoration of a gnarly glue bomb some 25 years ago. Another one that I didn't know existed Mike! I believe the only '69 Cobra I have seen is the AMT fast back version. Very cool & I wouldn't mind having one myself! Steve

I used AMT Candy Lacquers, thread for spark plug wires, and parts from the JoHan Sox & Martin Pro Stock 'Cuda kit. That is undeniably a rare bird Nick. It never dawned on me, but mine could have easily been included as one of my rarest. Although the '68 probably beats it. I recently picked up a good '68 as well. Steve

Interesting & rare Mike, but it doesn't meet the criteria. It needs to be a model you built yourself. Steve
ChrisBcritter Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 For me, rarest finished would be my '60 Corvair: Rarest unfinished would be an ITC '40 Mercury convertible.
pack rat Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Interesting & rare Mike, but it doesn't meet the criteria. It needs to be a model you built yourself. Steve Yea, I know, it hardly qualifies as a model, but I DID build it. Here's a pic of an "unbuilt".
michaelbaskett Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Yea, I know, it hardly qualifies as a model, but I DID build it. Here's a pic of an "unbuilt". Cool Mike...I have a couple of those myself... IIRC there was the Camaro, Corvette, Mustang and a Barracuda....
mk11 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 ...and it more than qualifies from an historical perspective mike
pack rat Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Getting things back on track......a Revell '62 Lancer
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 Yea, I know, it hardly qualifies as a model, but I DID build it. Here's a pic of an "unbuilt". I stand corrected! It absolutely qualifies! As far as I'm concerned, that looks like a model kit to me. Just a little unorthodox. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 For me, rarest finished would be my '60 Corvair: Rarest unfinished would be an ITC '40 Mercury convertible. Interesting! I've never really gotten into the compact realm, but I do love seeing them. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 Getting things back on track......a Revell '62 Lancer Now we're talking Mike! I think this is one compact I could add to my want list. So ugly it's cool! And a very nice job as well! Steve
Lovefordgalaxie Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 This one is mine rarest kit built. Original AMT Junior Craftsman 1957 Ford, the first Galaxie. 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie by CCCP Digital Studio, on Flickr
Ron Hamilton Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 That is without a doubt one of the rarest you'll find Ron! The '65/'66 Monacos are tough enough, but the '65/'66 880 & Polara convertibles are nearly impossible! I was watching an un-built '66 Monaco on ebay recently & I put in a pretty healthy bid on it. I couldn't believe it when it went for over $400.00!! I guess it just may be one that I'll have to scratch off of my want list. Steve I am not shocked that the '6 Monaco Hardtop went for some crazy money. I have an unbuilt one waiting to built, as well as a '65 Monaco HT which has to be restored. I had an unbuilt '65 Custom 880 Convertible that I bought with a busted windshield pillar. Instead of getting the Modelhaus replacement part, I did this with it. I fell in love with the car after seeing Tom Sheehy's Conversion. I plan to so some more Police Cruisers, but not with such a rare piece. I may do my '65 Monaco this coming year, as a bookend to this one. Black, Black Vinyl Roof, and the Saddle Interior, just like the car on the brochure cover (yes I have one) and display them side by side.
om617 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 The 65 Cadillac i think is the rarest i finished so far.
afx Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I built this using the original MPC kit, paid 3-figures for it. Of course the kit was re-issued a few months after I completed it.
gtx6970 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 (edited) Ok, For me that I have personally built/rebuilt is probably a toss up between my 59 Edsel - 60 Continental I know the Lincoln and Edsel are not the hardest to find, but they don't exactly grown on trees either,,I have rarer to find kits,,,just not that I've personally built. Edited December 9, 2017 by gtx6970
Bucket T Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Although one can get them in resin, these were rebuilt UCT originals. The Unreal Edsel funny car or the pre-rebuilt UCT was probably the first model I built. The Edsel is being rebuilt. I hope to post my Bugs Buggy in a few weeks.
Mr Stock Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 (edited) This is probably my rarest built kit, certainly not the rarest I have in the stash but the AMT 68 Corvette is not one you see everyday, this one was boxed as a FROG/AMT kit, they collaborated on a few kits in the late 60s for the UK market, that certainly makes it rarer than the AMT annual. Hers she is out of whack body proportions and all ! Lol. Edited December 19, 2016 by Mr Stock
Danger Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Although it doesn't have 4 wheels I believe this qualifies as a rare, built kit. The Tom Daniels kit Devil Chopper. Originally from 1971 and I don't believe it was ever re-issued. I paid $100 for it at a show and within a few minutes other people were trying to buy from me for double what I paid. Danger
