LDO Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Stopped at a new Hobbytown USA today. They had a paint rack for Model Master Lacquers. The top shelf had labels for Glitter paint. Big flakes like on bass boats and '70s custom cars. There was no paint, though. The guy at the shop didn't know anything about it.The labels showed silver, gold, and red flakes, plus clear.Has anyone here used it? I think it would be great for wild 1970s-style paint jobs, especially on bigger scales. I'm thinking of the big Dodge van that Tamiya offered as an r/c monster truck called "Vanessa's Lunchbox". The body was styrene, so it would be easy to work on. I think it was 1/12 scale.
Snake45 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I've seen the stuff. Looks TOO glittery to me. Many of the flake paints in the Testor line are right at the edge of even "bass boat flake" in scale.See if you can find Krylon Sparkle paints in your area. I think they have just the right amount of "bass boat flake" to look good for custom projects in your area. I've picked up their red, blue, green, and orange paints and am looking for cool projects to try them on. One can should do several!
BigTallDad Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 You can also add Pearl X to the paint, adding as much (or as little) as desired to get the desired results.Pearl X is available at Michael's, and comes in a variety (gold, silver, etc.) of colors.

They are very small flakes suspended in clear. With a little experimentation there would be many uses. There are some other "glitter" type paints out there and I think that Model Master might be one of the suppliers that you may want to avoid. These paints have a very ruff finish and would require many coats of clear to get smooth and by that time all trim detail would be long gone. I lucked out when I bought these at HL as they were in the close out area at $2.26 each.
vintagercr Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I have note used the Testors brand, but has tried glitter paint and I find that you really need to build up the coats of clear to get rid of the roughness.
randyc Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 One of the RC paint makers has some glitter that is small and can be added to your airbrush paint if you use an airbrush. Worked for me on a Manx body. Can't remember which brand but I got it at a Hobbytown as well.
