gtx6970 Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 (edited) Replica of a good friends actual car. Revells 1972 Olds kit. Built as a plain Cutlass convertible. All box stock ,, with exception to embossing powder for carpet. Painted in plain testors bright red with wet look clear. Interior is just duplicolor white primer with testors semi gloss clear. I need to find out what the accent wheel color was on his old car ,,then once all wrapped up . I'll give it to him as a gift. Long story short he bought his car back in high school. Drove it all thru college, dated his now wife in it. After graduation ,,,he started a family and career. And the car ended up in storage and just slowly went down hill over the past 20 plus years. With a daughter now in college, and 2 more to go. Last summer, he made the painful decision to sell the car to someone who would / could do something with it before it got any worst. So we spent a couple days getting it running a drive-able enough it would lot drive and sort of clean it up.. and he sold in the 1st day to someone who happened to drive by my shop and spotted it outside. . The next day the guy came to pick it up,,,,,, and when the car drove away I thought he was going to cry. So,,,,, when Revell issued this kit last year and was able to build a plain Cutlass I decided to give him is old car back,,,only slightly smaller and easier to store. I will say,,this car builds up beautifully with zero issues Thanks for looking, and comments or criticisms more then welcome . Edited December 9, 2017 by gtx6970
crazyjim Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Sweet, clean and SHINY . I'm sure your friend will love it. Weren't the wheel centers semi gloss black from the factory? Red to match the body would be trick.
gtx6970 Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Weren't the wheel centers semi gloss black from the factory? Red to match the body would be trick.Jim. I ' think ' his were white between the spokes. But im not 100% sure. Need to ask his wife and hope she'll know. .if not Ill just wing it . seeing the pics. I need to detail the sidemarkers.
CometMan Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Excellent build, Bill, as well as the story! Have seen surprisingly few of these here since they were released!
Againmikewins Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Are the headlight lenses molded in or just not installed? It looks great! The days when Oldsmobile was powerful! What a shame how they and Pontiac went the way of the buffalo.
Jim N Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Excellent work on the model. I am sure your friend will love it.
gtx6970 Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Are the headlight lenses molded in or just not installed? Thanks for that. I just ckd and forgot to put the clear lenses in . Will tend to that tonight when I do the side markers
Hard_2_Handle_454 Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 That would go well with the one I did.
gtx6970 Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 That would go well with the one I did. Sure would.
Kris Morgan Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Very nice build. Always cool when there is a story behind a build. Do you mean to say you were able to spray Testors Wet Look over enamel?
gtx6970 Posted February 8, 2017 Author Posted February 8, 2017 Yes, plain old Testors enamel. with Testors wet look clear over it . Ive done a couple this way with no issues
espo Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Beautiful build. The only trouble now is your friend is really going to cry. Can't say for sure on the wheel color. Maybe you could swear his wife to secrecy and see if she has an old picture to verify wheel color. I think Oldsmobile offered a couple of options on wheel color. As I recall the standard wheel was what GM called Argent Gray. But depending on trim option I've seen them body colored also. If he had white wheels as you thought it could mean the car was white when new or the wheels may have come from another car. He's going to love it.
gtx6970 Posted February 9, 2017 Author Posted February 9, 2017 Thanks all for the comments. Head light lenses are in, side markers are done. Found and glued the sunvisor assy in. Wheel centers are detailed in white like his old car. His car originally had hubcaps ,,,I found out he added the wheels a long time ago from another car. Its DONE and in my case for safe keeping till next time I see him,, which will be in the next few weeks I'm sure. Although I might surprise him and stop by his house maybe one day next week . Thanks again, I appreciate it
Kris Morgan Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 Thanks Bill, That great to know that the Wet Look clear can be used over enamel.
DumpyDan Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 They both look great, like that you did a low cost car......NICE!
c. jackson Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 nice build. 68-72 cutlass were just downright gorgeous.
