JollySipper Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I think they are pretty neat! It's a Sterling kit car........ It's VW powered, but I'm sure you could sneak a Porsche engine into one......
Snake45 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I've seen them (pictures, not real), but not for years. Pretty cool!
High octane Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I think they are pretty neat! It's a Sterling kit car........ It's VW powered, but I'm sure you could sneak a Porsche engine into one...... Very nice but I would probably use the Corvair w/four carbs engine if I had one.
Maindrian Pace Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I've actually worked on one. If the top motor fails, you are trapped in the car. Not a great feature.
Draggon Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Yes, there were a couple of them in my town way back when they first came out. One of the few kits for the VW that I found to have great lines. I see now that they are still around and have tube frames rather than the bug floorpan. What's that, like 50 years in business? Pretty amazing for a kit car company.
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I always liked the Sterling from day one. It's by far one of the best-looking original-design kit cars ever built, and has tremendous potential as the basis for something relatively cheap that looks wild and exotic.
unclescott58 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Very nice looking car. I'm surprised to hear they are still in business? Anybody know what's now being used as a power plant? Is it Subaru like several of the modren dune buggys out there?Scott
DeeCee Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) There are a couple down here where i live, here they are called a EUREKA , and based on a VW running gear, although one i sawhad a 13B rotary in the rear of it.Very awkward to sit in, as your butt is lower than your feet when driving it. torinobradley Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 A buddy of mine in High School used to drive one every once-in-a-while. Seats were fixed and they were short so I 6'1" rode with my forehead against the roof... Lots of fun though; rolling up under the school bus since the front was so low...
espo Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I had a Bradly GT II years ago. Trust me there is a big difference between a model car and a kit car.
Greg Myers Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 A buddy of mine in High School used to drive one every once-in-a-while. Seats were fixed and they were short so I 6'1" rode with my forehead against the roof... Lots of fun though; rolling up under the school bus since the front was so low...I had a student that had one. I always finagled a ride in anything fun or unusual.Well at 6'5" i couldn't fit in the drivers seat. Dang ! couldn't get the top down in the passenger seat either.
Can-Con Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Isn't that what Frankenstien drove off in at the end of the original "Death Race 2000" from the '70s?
Scott Colmer Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 (edited) I always liked the sterling too. I got to drive a bradley once. Not a great ride. My legs hit the steering wheel and it was hard to make a turn. (I was pretty skinny back then too). I was not impressed. Edited March 10, 2017 by Scott Colmer
JollySipper Posted March 10, 2017 Author Posted March 10, 2017 Here's a pic of one with the power top opened....... The main feature that drew me into these......
Dave Van Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 I looked into the Bug based version back early 1980's. One of the better fiberglass kit cars. But kids and life got in the way.....
