Raiders’ move to Las Vegas approved

The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas.

NFL owners today approved the move of the team from Oakland (where they’re playing in a rickety old stadium) to Las Vegas (where taxpayers will foot a large portion of the bill for a shiny new stadium). According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the vote was 31-1, with only the Dolphins objecting.

They won’t become the Las Vegas Raiders immediately, as the team plans to continue playing in Oakland at least for the 2017 season and probably for 2018 as well, while the new stadium is built. That will create an awkward situation where the home fans are cheering for a team that is about to pack up and leave.

But that has happened before in the NFL, and it will now happen again, and the reason is always the same: money. Raiders owner Mark Davis can make more green in Vegas than he could in Oakland, and so the Silver and Black is moving.

NFL stadiums have received an estimated $6.7 billion from taxpayers

With Nevada kicking in $750 million to build the Raiders a new stadium, NFL teams have now received nearly $7 billion in tax money to build stadiums over the last two decades.

According to an analysis from ESPN, the total price tag to taxpayers for building new stadiums and renovating old ones has been $6.7 billion since 1997. That includes 19 new stadiums and three major renovation projects.

Not every team has received public money. The stadium the Jets and Giants share in New Jersey was financed privately, and the stadium the Rams and Chargers will share in Los Angeles is being financed privately as well.

The NFL still makes most of its money from its television contracts. But there may not be enough attention paid to how much money the NFL makes from state and local leaders who are eager to attract teams or keep teams in place, and willing to pay a lot of taxpayer money on stadiums.

As far as stadiums go, they create JOBS, for the people who build them, the people who maintain them, the ticket sellers, the ushers, the concessionaires/vendors,etc. People need jobs and with that they pay taxes which is used for many things besides building stadiums.

I'm not a fan of any of the Tax money going to any of the sports teams or even shopping centers or business. In the end people like you and I end up with reduced services from our government and increased personal taxes to pay for some wealthy group to make more money with little or nothing out of their own pockets. If it's that good of an idea and they are going to make all the money then they should put their own money on the line. They don't "over pay" the people working there and provide little or no benefits for the workers. So what is there really to be gained except bragging wrights.

I think that the tax dollars they use to build the stadium should come from the area's businesses as they will be benefiting the most when the Raiders move to Vegas.
