Rocking Rodney Rat Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 (edited) "And now for something completely different" (no, not a man with three buttocks!) at least for me anyway. This was a quick build starting with the recently reissued AMT SuperBug shorty VW kit. I remember that kit fondly from my youth and I have plans for the body (stretched AA/FA) but that's another post. In any case, I figured the wimpy 4 cylinder mill wouldn't propel those huge rear meats (from the Orange Blossom Special puller truck) very fast, so the VW mill was swapped out for a Corvair 6 cylinder motor (out of the Revell Roth "Road Agent" kit). I've never built a Corvair engine before so it was a bit of a mystery as to how to go about it. I added some Weber style carbs and cone air cleaners, not sure if that's even close to correct, but it's only a model anyways...I beefed up the roll cage with additional bracing and yes, those are Model A headlights (had to throw some hot rod parts on there). Thanks for looking.... -RRR Edited May 28, 2017 by Rocking Rodney Rat
espo Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 I like this a lot. I had the good fortune to live in the Pismo Beach Ca. area in the mid 70's and this would have been a common sight in the dunes. The engineering is dead on and the air cleaners are the newer K&N type filters. We used to use what was little more than a thin sponge rubber "sock type" filter with oil sprayed on it to keep the sand out. The front tires would be very narrow since the wide tires would just skip over the sand and you wouldn't be able to turn. Your center roll bar from the main hoop to the front "knee" bar is just the way mine was.
Dennis Lacy Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 That's pretty neat. Looks like it would be a lot fun! It's ridiculous how the engine literally hangs off the end of the transaxle with no other support.. This makes me want to grab a Manx kit even more now and put my turbo Corvair parts pack motor to use!
geetee66 Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 I dig it, man!Easy to imagine this kicking up some fat rooster tails of sand and making a proper racket!well done

That's how the VW engine is and I just hacked off the block and glued the Corvair block on, so not sure if the Corvair has more mounts in 1:1 scale or not....just a quick build, now back to the belly tanker that has been waiting patiently on the bench for several weeks.... -RRR

Rocking Rodney Rat Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 That is how it's supposed to be, I just think it's funky the way the motor does hang out in the breeze! Agreed. If it's air cooled, it had better be out in the breeze!!!
