What I've been up to...

...not an awful lot this year but I haven't been entirely un-busy.

Spent a lot of time preparing pieces to be re-chromed. The company I take them to isn't cheap but they do an excellent job - this is about half of them:

I've also been working on 2 or 3 cars and this restoration of a 64 Tempest Le Mans should get finished this month if all goes well. I'm using the engine, chassis and wheels from the AMT 65 GTO.

Well spotted Steve - also a 62 Fairlane, 68 Imperial, 53 Studebaker and a Jaguar XK120. The 57 Chrysler bumpers on the right will go on an already finished model.

Glad you like the Le Mans and that the colour is recognisable: I mixed it myself from photos, all of which seemed to differ slightly in hue. I used Gravity Colours Alcoa silver and added some transparent red and a dash of yellow.

I recognized the Imperial grille but wasn't entirely confident of the year.

I know that I can special order the correct Sunfire Red from MCW, but to save myself some money I'm thinking that I will just order a bottle of '61 Pontiac/Olds "Dawnfire Mist" / "Autumn Mist".

Looks pretty close to the same color to me.

That chrome work looks spectacular!!  You have some pretty interesting projects there but I'm especially interested in the '62 Fairlane. What are your plans for it and what colours and theme do you have inmind for it. One of my first cars was a powder blue Fairlane 500 4 door sedan with the mighty 144 cu in six and three speed manual transmission. It was such a clean little car - I loved it but when a red on red '64 Falcon hardtop with factory buckets, console and a six cylinder automatic came along, the Fairlane went as a partial trade.  I have a real soft spot for those little Fairlanes, needless to say.

Gary I'm not that far with the Fairlane yet, have soaked the old paint off is all. It would look great in powder blue though.

I really like the US compacts of the 60s and if I were to own a 1:1 classic it would be something like a Tempest, Fairlane, Falcon etc. I'd probably opt for a down-market version with a 6 rather than a V8 - just to be different. In NZ I grew up in cars of that size but they were UK Fords or Vauxhalls, Holdens etc, all with 6 cylinder engines. My father's 3.3 liter Vauxhall Cresta 6 was one of the fastest 4-doors on NZ roads at the time and could drag off a 3.8 Jag because it was considerably lighter.

The Pontiac looks perfect and the chrome work is amazing. Please post pics. of the jaguar when done-Can't wait to see any of your builds completed.

Thanks Marty. Here's what the Jaguar looks like so far, although I polished it out after I took this photo. I thought the windscreen frame looked a bit thick so I thinned it down to a more delicate look and had it re-chromed along with the other parts (see above). I'll get it back on the bench when I've finished the Pontiac.
