Hawk312 Posted October 2, 2017 Posted October 2, 2017 `87 Iroc built from the somewhat rare Revell kit from the period. Now, before anyone goes out and tries to get ahold of one of these, there was *a lot* of work to make it accurate and the body panels to line up right. The kit comes with Camaro front seats, which are correct, but Firebird back seats. It is just plain weird. I had to make a set of matching seats for the back. The valve covers are the old smooth ones from the `82 kit, which doesnt have the ribs of the TPI valve covers. I had to make the valve covers from scratch. The exhaust is also a carry over, with incorrect dual mufflers. The door panels appear to be either Firebird or from the Berlinetta kit. And because it came with opening doors and rear hatch, it is very difficult to get the doors and hatch to line up properly to be convincing. I actually glued them shut before doing the body work and painting. There were also countless small details I had to change that would require a long list. But for instance, the center vent under the dash pad protruded out a little to far so I sawed it off, removed some material, and re-attached. This is actually going to an owner of a 1:1 just like it. His was an automatic, so I converted that as well. Anyway, let me know what you think.
Flynlo Posted October 2, 2017 Posted October 2, 2017 Awesome work. Truly a masterpiece that replicates the original to a "T".
Ron Hamilton Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Fantastic!!!!! It's a shame that Revell has not seen fit to re-release these gems.
1972coronet Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 OUTSTANDING ! Easily the finest build of that kit I've seen since its release (late 1986 , if I remember) . Scale Auto Enthusiast reviewed the Camaro and its Firebird twin in some late-1986 issue (maybe even early 1987) , and they mentioned the incorrect items (of which you've corrected so nicely !) . I could swear that these came with Gatorback VR50's --- a really "WOW" tyre upon its c.1984 release --- but your version appears to be outfitted with the earlier Camaro tyres (?) .Another excellent build , sir !
Dragline Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 That is the nicest build of that kit ever in the history of everything.
iBorg Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 C'mon, where is the model car. Truly looks like a scale replica. I have to agree with Bob, greatest build of this kit ever.
KENNEDYJR Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 That engine bay looks like a picture of the real car! Amazing work.
Luc Janssens Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Wow this looks fabulastic, uh, make that fantastic!
Merc-57 Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 One word: WOW Just Wow. You have built an awesome model! Perfect in every way
kelson Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 What a great buildup!i'm a huge Camaro fan! never knew this kit had so many inaccuracies,i Have a couple in my stash I wonder if the 1/16 scale 87'GTA shares the same problems?i have that kit a well.
Kmb0319 Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Just absolutely PHENOMENAL as usual! I would swear that is not a model. I know you did one for the magazine years ago, but I can't get into that back issue... we need (well, my sorry butt does) a painting tutorial from you, as time after time you produce the most perfect finishes I've ever seen!!!
peekay Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Amazingly realistic and beautifully built model. I hope the new owner can appreciate the finesse and skill that has gone into this.
PARTSMARTY Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Absolutely perfect In every single detail-wow !!!
espo Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Beautiful build. The detailing is just outstanding. After looking at the first couple of pictures I had to check and see if this was the prototype or the model.
iamsuperdan Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I too am calling BS...those are obviously pics of a real car! Outstanding, simply outstanding.
Draggon Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 That engine bay looks like a picture of the real car! Amazing work. This would be a great contender for the old "real or model" thread!
Hawk312 Posted October 3, 2017 Author Posted October 3, 2017 Thanks everyone! Here is a better pic of the dash, and one of the chassis. I had to convert the trans to a 700r4 like the 1:1 and modify the exhaust to a single muffler set up.
Ron Hamilton Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Thanks everyone! Here is a better pic of the dash, and one of the chassis. I had to convert the trans to a 700r4 like the 1:1 and modify the exhaust to a single muffler set up. That is some great workmanship David. It's great to have the knowledge of the one-to-one to go by, and the skills to carry it off as you did. When I built mine back in the day when they were new. I did not deal with the inaccuracies of the kits. I have most of the kits of that series in various states of assembly down in the basement. None of them look anywhere as good as yours. Last year, I restored my Iroc Z. I just cleaned it up and polished it. I found my '82 Z28 kit. I cut the roof off of it to build a replica of a convertible conversion that we had at our dealership since it was moulded in Red, and my Demo was White. I believe the roof I cut off, and the rear window are in my pile of parts. I found some of them, and if I am able to find it, I would like to convert it back into a Hardtop. The lower stripe decals would be hard to recreate after I strip the enamel paint I did in late '83, but it would be an interesting build. If I cannot find the parts, I'll just freshen it up like I did to the Iroc Z. I did the '84 Berlinetta as a Street Machine with an Injected V8 and American 200S wheels and different tires. I found the Replica Stock wheels and tires, and the Air Cleaner, carb, and Manifold., so it can be rebuilt to something close to being a Replica Stock Camaro. The paint can be polished out, and I can scratch build a spoiler cap that has been missing since I built the model in 1985. .I have an unbuilt MPC '82 Firebird T/A with a broken "A" pillar somewhere in my basement that I may still resurrect. I have always liked 1/16 kits. I have several in the collection to be built from a new kit, or restored from my collection, as I never tossed them out, and they were not built as Glue-Bombs. That is one fantastic Iroc Z David.
