I remember an interview on 60 Minutes 20 or 25 years ago, where somebody said, "If we don't do something to retain our manufacturing base, in about 20 years we're all going to be sitting around selling insurance to each other."

As the two most common images on my TV these days seem to be Flo and that annoying little lizard, I suspect he was right.

The origination of that basic premise goes back to 1866, and various versions have been attributed to Mark Twain, among others. The original made fun of a society where the members made their livings by doing each other's laundry.

The central idea, of course, is the economic fallacy of a viable economy being based entirely on trading services. Manufacturing is essential for wealth creation. Service-trading just moves money around, but doesn't provide a foundation for the value of currency.

Humans seem to have forgotten some of the most important principles that were once obvious to anyone with some common sense.

Ever read Kipling's poem "The Gods of the Copy-Book Headings"? If not, it's worth looking up.

Snake, I was thinking more this side of the Pond but I can see where you're coming from there. ;)

No, no, I was thinking of a certain personality on this side of the pond. He introduced me to the poem on his radio program.

Imagine using your Life Line on this question???    Bill needs to adopt this kid and teach him a few things!

I don't think I'd hold my breath on Bill trying if he doesn't know the answer to THAT! You just might die instead.

He probably puts his shoes on the wrong feet, and damm handy they make Velcro so he won't have to deal with laces.

What's REALLY sad is that apparently 30% of the audience didn't know the answer either.

Obviously, he's an equal among his peers. Stupid people, like lemmings, tend to travel in groups.

I wonder how much horsepower it would take to capsize Guam...

Probably as much as it would take to drive the Mars Rover over to where the Astronauts planted the flag.

He didn't get the answer correctly and I think they still gave him a trophy so he could feel good about himself.
