iamsuperdan Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Started this one up a couple of days ago. I've been a huge fan of those massive late 70s cars for years. I chalk it up to growing up around them, and learning to drive on them. For a good chunk of the 80s, our garage had a 1977 Plymouth Fury sedan, a 1978 Plymouth Fury Sport Suburban wagon, as well as a 1968 Plymouth Fury III convertible. Before that, we had a 1973 AMC Matador and a 1967 ( I think) Mercury Comet Cyclone. I learned to drive o nthe Fury wagon, and my first car in 1990 was a 1978 Ford Thunderbird. So big cars have always had a place in my heart. And that brings me to this build. I'm turning the Dukes Of Hazzard polkice car into our 1977 Plymouth Fury. Thatnks to some info on this forum, I found a couple of resin grille options to choose from, plus I have a few sets of wheels that will be more suited to a proper build, and don't look like they belong on a clown car. If you have this kit, you'll know what I mean! Here's what I'm going for. So far, I've modifed the body to accept the Fury grille, and have started basic assembly of the engine. Chrome sprue is sitting in the purple bath right now, so engine assembly will continue tonight once that is rinsed and dried.
1972coronet Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Nice ! Those 1975-1978 Monaco / Gran Fury twins ( their full-sized relatives were 'Royal Monaco' and 'Fury' ) certainly are iconic . What engine did your family's '77 have under its bonnet ? Also ; where did you get the translucent tail lamp lenses ?? Certainly makes the back-up lamps and the 1977-only ambre turn signals easier to paint versus painting the kit's red-moulded lenses ...
Bucky Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Interesting project! I bought a new '75 Dodge Coronet Brougham, a used '76 Dodge Charger Sport, and a used '76 Chrysler Cordoba, so I know how nice these cars are/were! I'll be following this build!
Mike999 Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I can't remember where I read this, but I've been laughing about it for years. Pretty sure it was in a crime novel, maybe by Carl Hiaasen. One character was a police detective who had spent his whole career, since he was a patrolman, riding in Chrysler cop cars. He thought they were uncomfortable and hated them. He had planned for years to write Lee Iacocca a letter, telling him just how much he hated his cars. But he could never get past the greeting of his letter - which always came out as "Dear S###head."

I still love this generation, and have been looking for a 1:1 for a while now. I need a new toy/project! No idea what engine it had. I remember it sounded angry. Our wagon was the full jam model, and had the biggest you could get at the time according to my dad. I'm guessing that means either a 383 or a 440? Not really sure. I do remember our 68 Fury III had the 318, because the hood emblem had 318 on it. The 77 sedan definitely sounded louder and angrier than that 68. If I found the VIN, is there some kind of a VIN decoder or website where I could find out the exact optioning it had? That would be interesting to me. The clear lenses and grille came from Shapeways. If you look in the resin section, there's a thread near the top all about the resin grilles and lights.
#1 model citizen Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) I'm not sure if you can find a VIN decoder here, but https://www.allpar.com has lots of info on all MoPars (as the name implies) That is where I would begin EDIT: Just checked the sight Begin here: https://www.allpar.com/mopar/vin-decoder.html Hope that helps! 1972coronet Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I can decode its V.I.N. real quickly . I'd imaging that it's something like 'RH41P7A' ; the last six numbers are its sequential build number (starting with 100001 , ad seq.) .
PARTSMARTY Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 i'm mopar guy and can't wait to see more-how cool !!!
disabled modeler Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Cool project.... I love the big bodied cars of the 60s and 70s..!
