Sport Suburban Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I finally had finished this one. Had it a few years and it was a mess. Body was trashed and kept my eye open for another one. Eventually one came up and I bought it. This is a 69 GTX from Johan and it is built pretty much as Johan issued it. Chrome was redone and decals are Keith Marks.

espo Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Extremely sharp looking build. You really captured the look of the 1:1 GTX. Being a Johan, was the interior as shallow as their old Road Runner kit ??
Ron Hamilton Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Beautiful. I have an unbuilt one in my collection. The body is very brittle, as I fixed the break. I considered getting it cast in resin so that I can build it without worrying about it cracking. It looks so much better than the AMT I built a long time ago.

As Simon Cowell says when someone turns in a particularly impressive performance, "THAT's how you do it!" As Ron said, the old JoHan is just flat-out superior to the AMT in almost every way. I WISH I had one of these. (Have several Road Runners, but no GTX.) Well done and model on!
W-409 Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Wow! That's one beautiful GTX! I think you nailed the overall look on this one, it looks like it was just driven out from a dealership. Very nice and smooth paint job with a great color choice and sharp BMF work too. I find nothing to complain about.

In defense of AMT, I will say while I like the Johan body more, I think that AMT has the superior chassis and drive train, as it should, considering how much newer the AMT kit is.

Absolutely, but unless you are a detail freak like me, the Johan kit will suffice, and even though it is lacking in detail, and has wire axles, the fit is great. I bought a '70 Road Runner body that was based on the unobtainium Jo Han annual, and I robbed a broken '70 Superbird I built and scrapped for the interior and chassis to do a simple project. When they were cheap, I bought up a bunch of AMT Road Runners and GTX for the chassis and powertrains. I did a '69 Coronet R/T that way, and I have an R& R '68 Charger R/T and '68 Coronet R/T resin transits, which I have fitted the updated chassis under, which fit nicely. I plan to use the Dog Dish Caps and Steelies from the Revell '68 Charger for the Coronet R/T. With the Revell '68 through '70 Charger kits, and the AMT '70 Super Bee, I am going to have quite a fleet of turn of the Decade Mopar muscle. Raoul's build puts my AMT '69 GTX to shame, and I won a best Mopar trophy at a contest with it. By the way, I have an AMT '69 GTX Convertible, that I am considering combining it with a derelict JoHan '69 Road Runner to do a '69 Road Runner Convertible, incorporating the superior Johan Grille and Tail lamps into the AMT body, and making the appropriate changes to the body and interior.

I have a few more restorations to show. Here is what I started with. This was given to me by a good friend as he said is anyone can build it I could. It was pretty complete and had all of the GTX specific parts. The body was cut into a convertible and all emblems removed. Hood was sanded down flat and I think they were going for a Satellite conv. I placed it next to a AMT body for comparison. I had another hood from a Road Runner so since I couldn't do much with the body I kept looking for another body. I did eventually find one and you can see the results.
