landman Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) I have been sorting stuff out and filling parts bin. In the box of the Tall T I used for the '25 Dodge project, there is a 430 Lincoln engine with a couple of intake options including the Latham blower. I started wondering where I could use that. Now we all know that the real Hot Rod Lincoln (from the song) is a Ford with a Lincoln engine. It turns out I have the remains of a Ford coupe , parts of which went into my '34 Chevy. So I thought a '34 Ford with a 430 would make a neat Hot Rod Lincoln. But then I also have a '48 Continental which would take some serious work to turn into a replica of the real thing, but what if I stuck that 430 in it? That would be a Hot Rod Lincoln too wouldn't it? And then who cares about its lumpy engine and featureless wheels ? the matter is officially open to discussion. Edited November 12, 2020 by landman
Jon Haigwood Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 I believe the original Hot Rod Lincoln had a Lincoln frame also. Lincoln front bumper and it was black. . I planned on doing one sometime in the future and I have some research info on it. I will see if I can locate it you are interested.

I wasn't planning on a replica of the original, just a play on the theme using either the 34 Ford or the 48 Lincoln.

Richard Bartrop Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Anyone who can make something out of that Lincoln kit has my deepest respect.
slusher Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 If I remember right the car was a model A with a Lincoln engine with a 4.11 gear. Could always google the song lyrics..

Could always google the song lyrics.. That is correct and the car in the first photo is it. If he didn't own it as is suggested here, it was that car which inspired him to write this in response to another race song. Edited November 12, 2020 by landman
landman Posted February 3, 2018 Author Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) I've come to a decision. It will be a continuation on the theme "Ford with a Lincoln engine", the 34 with a 430. As for the '48 Continental, I may be able to do a curbside and park it beside the '41 I already have, or get a junkyard '41 and use the wheels and engine from it. There was a thread here of one apparently quite good built by Jeff Sauber. However all photos have disappeared. Edited February 3, 2018 by landman

It was part of the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) family of engines which replaced the y-Block.they went from 383-410-430-462. this is the 430 from the Orange Crate kit. It has Y-block valve covers for some reason. Edited November 12, 2020 by landman
#1 model citizen Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Here's the real story. It was built by Charlie Ryan, the writer & original recording artist of the song. It was a cut up Lincoln Zephyr with a V12 flat head engine. The model A coupe body rode on the cut down frame. It was indeed black. http://www.precisiontune.com/charlie-ryans-self-built-hot-rod-lincoln-inspired-the-song
#1 model citizen Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 The Feb 2018 issue of Car Kulture DeLuxe features a different Hot Rod Lincoln in its cover story. This '28 Lincoln roadster hot rod has a 331 cid Chrysler Hemi. The article also has a brief history of Charlie Ryan's Lincoln. It stated his Lincoln Zephyr chassis was shortened 2ft. It also said it had overdrive, 4.11 gears & a 4 bbl carburetor, all mentioned in the song. (When doing a Google search, one version of the lyrics read "4 bbl carburetors".) It was a 1930 Model A body.
Jon Haigwood Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Last time I talked with Charlies son the the car was in a museum in washington State. I don't remember which one possibly La May Car Museum or do I know if it is still there.
horsepower Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 I'm contemplating putting that 430 MEL engine with the six twos into the Revell Custom Merc for an all Ford Motor Company car, and do the same thing using the supercharged version in the AMT '49 Merc' for a period version hot rod.
Olderisbetter Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 I'm about to finish a 48 Continental. What a nightmare. But it came out pretty good. More than a 3 month project though. Mine has a Pontiac engine...just because that 12 cylinder that came with it looks more like a shipping pallet than an engine and I had a Pontiac engine in my parts bin. Took some serious surgery to the transmission hump to mount it. I think the Lincoln 430 would be a cool job.
