ROY FERGUSON Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 (edited) I saw an ad today for GREEN FROG masking tape for delicate items. Has anyone used it on models ? Edited June 3, 2018 by ROY FERGUSON
TarheelRick Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I used some a couple years ago, still have it hanging on my wall. If I remember correctly it did not stick as well as I hoped it would and I got a bit of bleed. Of course I was trying to use it on complex curves, it may work alright on smooth, straight surfaces or if cut into thinner strips..
Tom Geiger Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 For complex curves and perfect separation lines, use Tamiya tapes. You can match the line you want, or you can cut the line the same way you would cut BMF. For those saying that it's too expensive, I just use it for the match line. Past that I'll use painters blue tape to protect the rest of the body.
crazyjim Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Tamiya tape, sometimes sliced to be more narrow, followed up with blue painters tape. Tried Frog tape a couple of times and it was garbage.
ROY FERGUSON Posted June 3, 2018 Author Posted June 3, 2018 Thanks I have a diecast truck I will need to mask much of and I have the Tamiya tape but it is narrow need a tape to cover more area. I will try the method mentioned above
bugman9317 Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I'm with everyone else. I never used it on my models, but tried it when painting the house and it was terrible.

peteski Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 That tape is supposed to have the edge of the adhesive treated with some substance which absorbs water from latex paint and swells up, supposedly sealing up the edge perfectlyy. If used with organic-solvent-based paints (like hobby enamels or automotive paints), the frog tape will not give any advantage over standard masking tape. I bought some years ago (without understanding how it works) and tried it on a model, but I found it too stiff for masking models. For masking models, just like others have mentioned, I use the 3M Blue painters tape (for filling in larger areas), and Tamiya tape for fine masking. I also use Parafilm-M and liquid masking agents. It all depends what type of masking I'm doing.
dshue76 Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Frog tape is terrible, new fresh rolls have some stick to them but the older the roll gets the less stick it has. I've had it pull off of a wall while rolling paint over it..... I use 3m blue painters tape for general use and I love the Tamiya for fine line and color separation. Just be sure to handle the Tamiya rolls with care if you beat up the edges it won't be any better than the 3m, in a pinch if you cut the 3m with a sharp blade then that fresh edge works as well as Tamiya. Another tape I avoid is the Blue Hawk tape from Lowes, if left on too long it leaves residue and can be hard to remove and paint sticks to the edge causing lifting issues.
Darren B Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 To me Tamiya tape is the best for hobbies, models, and small items....
BigTallDad Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 From what I've personally experienced and read others' comments in this thread, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GREEN FROG MASKING TAPE!

I use cheap masking tape from Walmart, I think it's Duck brand. For sharp edges, I lay it on sheet styrene and cut my own strips with XActo and straightedge to whatever width is appropriate to the task at hand. For general masking I use it right off the roll.
Deuces Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 I've thought about chucking up a roll of blue tape on my H.F. 7x10" table top lathe... And find a way to mount an Exacto knife on the toll post and cut my own fine line strips.... Or is this nutz???
crazyjim Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Tamiya tape is better. Cut it with an Xacto and straightedge.
Tom Geiger Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Okay we've reached consensus... Tamiya tape for the fine edge and then painters blue for covering the rest! Even painters blue loses stickup over time. I just painted my daughter's new condo and brought a few rolls I had at the house. I noticed they weren't sticking well. So I went to the pack of rolls I had bought that day and it worked fine. So the old rolls went in the trash!
