Hello,

Curious what you all think is the best Viper GTS kit?

Thanks in advance.

I've read that the Revell version has serious fitment issues where as the AMT version goes together nicely.

I built the AMT one many years ago ('94?) and while I had no problem with it as far as building, I don't think AMT got the wheels and tires right on that one. Wheels are too small, and the tires don't have the correct profile as those in the kit to my eyes are too tall. Those cars had very low profile tires which I think make the car. Revell got that right in their kit, so if I ever get around to building that one, I'd want the kit just for the tires as they appear much more correct.

The model is in many pieces now somewhere on my third floor, but I remember getting resin wheels and tires back then from someone in the aftermarket..........darn if I can remember who now as we're talking nearly 25 years ago. They could have resin copied Revell's kit which I think was out the same time as AMT's.

The same can be said of AMT's Prowler kit which came out around that time. Monogram/Revell got the wheels and tires right, while AMT cheaped out.

Just my two cents worth! ;)

I have both kits (unbuilt) and yes, the AMT kit has the tires and wheels undersize, and the tires have too high of a profile.  Revell tires look ok, but IIRC, there is some issue with the wheels too.  I would have to dig out both kits and look at the again.  I was thinking of using the Revell wheels with the AMT model, but again IIRC, there was some problem with that.  I haven't looked at these kits for probably over 10 years.

I liked everything about the Revell kit except the fit issue where the front fascia meets the hood. I could find no way to line up everything without leaving the gap you can see in the photo. Some pre-fitting and adding a strip of plastic to the hood would probably fix it, but I already had mine painted when I discovered it.

The above photo of the Revell's Viper reminded me what the problem was with its wheels:  They are too shallow or flat!  Especially the rear wheels. The wheel center should be inset deeper. Sort of what Revell did on the Starsky & Hutch Grand Torino.
