I've searched around with no luck, so I hope someone here can help. I'm putting together a split window Beetle using the Best Model Car Parts conversion for the Tamiya Beetle. I want to build it in a sort of Cal-Look style. Does anyone know of a source for wheels, engine parts, or other performance or style stuff for Beetles? I know about the P.E. set for the Fujimi Porsche 356 engine, but I'm looking for Weber manifolds, Extractor exhausts, wheels...any parts sources would really help, Thanks in advance!

Look for the Polar Lights/ Round 2 Spider Man and Harley Quinn VW Beetles. Both come with custom bumpers, seats, two sets of custom wheels. The kit is pretty nice (it's been designed as a snap kit, but it has full engine detail), the custom parts seem to look like prototypical custom VW stuff (although I am no expert). I know you are asking for aftermarket stuff, but it would seem to me that these kits would be very good parts sources for what you want to do. Some reviews of these kits might be on the forum for all I know.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Good info here. I'll contact Norm, but I checked the Finks Garage site, but it doesn't look like there are any engines available, or if the site is even still active. Pity, that's just what I was looking for.

Thanks for quoting my old post Bill!

And while I got ya, a question...  the car above is a VW drag car with a US V8 that was built by American GIs in Germany around 1970.  It used the stock VW front end.  So the question -   was a VW front end ever used in drag cars or street rods?  I know things like Volare and Mustang II front ends are popular, even reproduced.  Were VWs used or is this car just outright dangerous!

:D

Yup. One of the most famous uses was in the Leroi "Tex" Smith XR-6 hot rod.  You can see the Bug front suspension poking out in the photo below. Bug front ends also showed up on dragsters, as they were light, strong, simple, cheap, and easy to set up once you understood how they worked. The suspension is pretty much identical to what Porsche used on the 356 and 550 series cars.

I only know, that IMC or Union did a kit in the 1960s / 1980s with the front engine Beetle as an Option near the mid 1960s Beetle.

See them on scalemates: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/949930-imc-114-200-volkswagen

I own both kit of each producer and can tell you, they are identical (except the color of the plastics ;) )

Quite interesting thread anyway! I have the Polar Light Beetles as well - because of the rims, "nerf bars" .... You can see the content of the box here: http://web.ipmsusa3.org/content/marvel-comics-amazing-spiderman-volkswagen-beetle .. The Harley Quinn is identical except the decals / stickers. As extra parts you'll get

- sport seats

- EMPI 5  Spoke rims

- BRM alloy rims

- hub caps without VW-Logo

- sport exhaust

- nerf bars (bumper things)

The Herbie by Polar Lights doesn't have the extra parts. It is stock only but has this sliding roof - what Spider-Man & Harley Quinn don't have.
