From the Facebook event page of a local event My Furry Valentine....

Today we celebrate mixed-breed dogs, or mutts. This special day was created to be celebrated on two dates per year, July 31st and December 2nd to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Most pure breeds that end up in the shelter are generally rescued quickly by either the public wanting a “less expensive” purebred dog or by a pure breed rescue. The day’s mission is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.

Here's three of my foursome (all four are rescues)

Turner...Jack Russell/Sheltie

Bear....Pekingese/Border Collie

Brian....Husky/Aussie

Not shown only because she turns every time I try to get her pic....Jamie, purebred Aussie

Two of my dogs are mixed breed—Beardsley (aka B-wa)—a chi/terrier mix and Raine—some sort of terrier mix.  They were rescues, a bonded pair.  Love them.

Cool dogs, love the last one.

He was a stray.  He has two chips but neither had current owner info.  His fur was so overgrown that his first trip was to the groomer/vet and they cut over 4 pounds of fur off him!  His fur was so bad that he couldn't even even have a bowel movement without it sticking to his butt (the shelter could have at least trimmed THAT)

Too many humans failed him!

Not to sound grumpy or anything, but there seems to be a national Day just about for anything.  I would have imagined that we have already ran out of the days of the year for yet another National Day.  This is getting silly.  Not that there is anything wrong with mutts (or any other things celebrated on all those National Days), but do we really have to celebrate all those things?! Bah-humbug!  :D
