Please let us not forget the excellent Daytona Coupe  kit by Scale Motorsports in 24th scale.

The AMT kit was issued under the Frog brand name in the UK under licence as was the MPC by Airfix a number of years ago. I have the Frog kit still in my stash and am considering converting it back to what the Cobra was spawned from, the AC Ace.

A resin AC Ace Bristol trans-kit for the AMT Cobra is in the works.  It will be offered through Historic Racing Miniatures if you are interested.

I believe the  Academy kit is a Coupe and the Accurate Miniatures kit was supposed to be a roadster ?

The plan was to do them all (the 289's).

Monogram offered a Daytona coupe body and tire/wheel KIT in 1/32 scale to be used with their slot car chassis. A very nice kit that I had hoped would be made into a static kit someday.

Seriously, Greg and Ray. Why do we have five threads about Cobras? One big amazing Cobra thread would be just fine.

As soon as I figure out how to merge five threads into one, it will be done.

I think for right or wrong we ended up with more threads because it started out not as a generic post about Cobra's but rather only about AMT specific models. Then one was started on just Monogram Cobra's ect.  That's my 2 cents anyway.

I have not been able to snag that one. I bid on a couple that popped up on the bay but they went for more than I was willing to spend.

How high did the bidding go out of curiosity?

In one of the modeling mags from the late '80s - early '90s, there was a listing in the new kit section. It was for a 1/43 Daytona Coupe kit from a Japanese manufacturer. This wasn't your average resin model. As a matter of fact, it was made out of brass. The whole model. Brass chassis, drivetrain, suspension, the works. Oh, the body panels were formed from almost paper-thin brass, too. You had to assemble this yourself by brazing or soldering the parts and everything you could possibly imagine was functional. What really made this kit stick in my mind was the price...............$1699. I've been trying to find more info on this for years.

I had one of the 1/43 kits that had about 300 parts (metal, photo etch) that I ended up trading because I figured I would never build it.  I think it was made by Superior.

I have seen that kit. Builds up very nice. I have seen it go for 300.00 to 600.00 bucks. I don't have one. That kind of money I will devote to a different hobby. I probably could not build it very good anyway.

You are so right. This is a very nice little kit. Very detailed and really nice PE wire wheels. I have built at least 4 and they go together very nicely. Several on the bay now. I paid 15 with shipping for my last one but they normally around 20 bucks or so.

Go for one of the Monogram 289's they're nice with some photo etch as well. They're out there for reasonable prices.

That was Bob Johnson's idea. After he left Monogram he wanted to start a model company that would make kits just like the Cobra. It fail to generate enough interest to get off the ground although I did some R&D for him.

The 1:43 scale kit is wonderful but have always been curious why Monogram wouldn't also issued this as a 1:24 scale kit and increase their return on the R&D investment.  Do you have any insight Dave?
